How bad is the craziness? Will I be able to find a mosin?

I haven't been to a gun shop since the panic buying started, but I've seen various posts here that are telling me it's bad...

My tax return came surprisingly early, and I've got a hankering for a Mosin Nagant.
None of the online stores like Aim etc seem to have them, so I'm thinking that it might be worth seeing if the LGS have them.
They usually don't seem to carry them, (one suggested I order through Aim and have it shipped to then for a transfer) so I'm wondering if it's going to be a bad time to be trying.

I know that I can answer my question simply by calling tomorrow, but let's have a tally of opinions and see whether or not we were right :D

Since people are reporting that even .22lr is hard to come by, I'm expecting that the madness will have permeated even bolt action milsurps and I'll be disappointed.

Gentlemen, place your bets...

Most of the online places are out, though I'm not sure if it's due to current craziness or just the fact that foreign warehouses may finally be running dry.

Someday we will run out of old bolt-action rifles from foreign wars...are we at that point yet? Certainly we are getting there for ammo...Russian 7.62x54R is still available but a lot of things that were easier to find years ago (308 surplus, 303 surplus, etc.) are getting thin.

Alternatively we may just have hit one of the pauses between import and distribution.

Best bet for a milsurp at the moment is to post a WTB on your local gun forum, a general gun forum like THR, or a milsurp-oriented one like milsurps.com. Also, of course, Arms List, GunBroker, etc., though GB always seems to have the highest prices. Still some nice Finnish M39s at Gunsnammo.com, though you'll pay top dollar there.

BTW, if you're in the Portland, Oregon area I know a couple local shops that have Mosins on the shelf as of this week.

Nope, I'm in NY :(

I'm hoping that I can buy an 'Assault Mosin Nagant' with a 'Five Bullet Assault Clip' (come to think of it, Mosins actually DO use clips, don't they? :D) before they get banned!

Another New Yorker here. Mosins are still "safe" -- for the time being. You'd just better hope that Andy Cuomo doesn't happen to catch Enemy at the Gates on cable some night.

Is it really so bad there's a run on mosins? I thought I could take off the tin foil but if this has come to pass, maybe I should think again.

Yeah, I remember not so long ago they were literally almost half that price!

I was debating with my wife a couple of years ago whether to get a C&R and spend every last penny we had on Mosins. Looks like it would have been a good investment.

I bet Cuomo would love 'Enemy at the Gate' but wonder why his fellow communists were allowed to own guns :D

Just ordered one from Allans Armory. Sign up for his e-mail updates, He's been getting them fairly regularly. A little pricey but very nice rifles. Bought my 91/59 from him a couple years ago and couldn't be happier.

I think we still have some good Mosins on the horizon. There were 17.5 million of them made. When you take into account that there were ONLY 1 million 1903 Springfields and they lasted as long as they did, we will probably be in them for years to come. I think it is just a lull time.

Of course this is just my opinion.

They're everywhere.

Some folks are starting to let go of their nicer or rarer specimens at decent prices to fund other projects and purchases.

I'm seeing armslist flooded with hexes, M44s, and Finns.:)

The local surplus store is running a special that consists of a fairly good quality Mosin with accessories and a 440 count spam can of Wolf ammo for $300. No Mosins without all the crap for sale. The thing is that they still have some magnum primers and they are priced at $28 per K. Same price as they were selling them for a year ago.

Those things are like cock-roaches. There eveywhere. If you can`t find one ,you must not be looking every hard.

I wonder how a Mosin Nagant M44 will go over in NY. It has a bayonet. Same with a French MAS 36....chris3

Just got back from a show there you would normally see TABLES of mosins for $95-$110. This time I saw exactly 9, and they were asking 150+

Well, good(ish) news!
I git a beautiful 1942 Izzy with a perfect bore, great wood and all the accessories.
Only goodish news because I paid $199, but I'm happy that I got a good one for my money.
The store had seven Mosins, and a guy was buying one as I walked in.

That's not horrible.

I got an M44 in great shape last week, numbers matching...for $300.

You did ok.

My bet is you shall go on gunbroker and find a Mosin that fits your budget. Seriously, the supply is huge and the rifle is C&R, the only question is getting a good one. Look at the year of production. The cleanest ones are 1946 and after. That is because many of them weren't issued after WW2. They went to storage. You will see bright shiny bores and decent shellac. Many are M44 carbine es. They are identical to M38 just shorter and therefore louder. Most prewar and wartime specimens will have dull bores, lots of cosmoline covering up zero cleaning of any kind. Don't worry about the optics unless you are a collector. Iron sights are more fun on the Mosin. You can sporterize and de-sovietize it until loses its historic personality which is really the only point of this rifle. It was already near obsolete in Stalingrad. Great snipers shot it well because that's what they had. But I digress. Don't worry about the trigger either. You can get one through Internet for less than $300. Bright bore and sharp rifling a must. Clean receiver is nice. Other parts are replaceable and inexpensive. That's about it from an ol' Russian.

Oh and the ammo is pushing one buck a round. Where was I. Right. Don't buy a foul-bore shotup musket for a 100 to save money. This is an expensive gun to shoot. You'll do better with anything x39 caliber. Buy a quality Mosin. Spending more on ammo than your rifle is worth will make you feel like, eh....

spending more on ammo than the rifle is fairly common. was even before this crisis.
