Did the election results cause a run on ammo?

20 minutes ago I went to Aim Surplus' website to see if the price of their South African 7.62 X 51 ammo has gone up in price.

I didn't see it listed.

I called them.

"Aim Surplus. How may I help you?"

"I was just on your web site, and I did not see South African 7.62 X 51 listed."

"That's correct, sir. We're out of it."

"You're out of South African 7.62 X 51?? I've been regularly buying it from you for the past year. When will you be getting more??"

"We don't know if we'll be getting any more."

I went to Sportsman's Guide. No Milsurp .308. I went to The Ammunition Store. No Milsurp .308. I went to the Ammo Man. No Milsurp .308.

I'm panicing. Where can I buy Milsurp .308?

They've been out a few days at least. There is not currently a large source of surplus x51. There are a number of other resellers that have it.

They've been out for some time... .308 is going into a dry spell... One I figure will last some time, until things are sorted out politically and people decide whether or not to horde.

I've noticed a shortage of cheap .308 of ANY type for a while now. I had some difficulty finding UMC yellow box, and had to look a bit to find .308 match.

That's because it is surplus ammo. The supply is finite. This is the end of that, and with UN arms control agreements, who is there left with .308 rifles going out of service? Iran?

Start reloading or find new production commercial ammo at a decent price.

308 many not be used in very many battle rifles any more but it is still the major US and NATO machine gun caliber. All platoon level MGs are 7.62X51. All M1s sport 2 M240s. It could be alot is being used up right now. If it does get surplused it just has to be delinked. I've shot quite a bit of surplus mg ammo and it works fine.

I'm not sure about an ammo rush, but for me, if the dem's mention anything related to an assault weapons ban, I will load up on hi-cap magazines for my pistols immediately. I already have a pretty decent stockpile of ammo on hand.:D

It appears they got a majority

But not an ovewhelming one. Remenber the last time tey got anything major through, they had control of both Houses AND the Executive branch. Don't go all gloom and doom right away.

Buying and hoarding is tempting (and likely a good idea), but our enemies have your stash in their sights as well as what you can buy new. We must be especially strong against any kind of license/tax/permit/inspection/storage requirement. Some of them want you to have to buy an "arsenal license" if you have 1,000 PRIMERS! And the Govt has to inspect and approve your storage facilities. And PAY for the "privledge". Those are ideas I really dislike.

They learned that if they try to take away too many guns at once, people get upset, and they get thrown out of power (94 AWB). So some of them at least will try going after our ammo. Cheap surplus ammo is going to go away. Once current supplies dry up, there won't be much more. They will pass laws requiring the military to destroy it, rather than let it get into the "wrong hands".

It will take time, the stronger we make our views known, the longer it will take. The pendulum swings, and it is up to us to see it doesn't swing all the way to their side and stay there.

1. Executive branch still resides with the Republicans
2. Some of the newly elected Democrats are considered "Conservative" and have talked pro-gun in the past.

Don't assume the worst yet.

Having said this, anytime the Dems have control SHOULD raise concern.

The fact that Pelosi is third in line to the President scares the tar out of me. If I understand correctly, if the President and Vice President cannot serve, she becomes the acting president. Now that is scary!!!

Surefire, that thought has been bothering me all day. I'm sure that I won't sleep well tonight knowing that fact is bouncing around the back of my unconcious. My only hope is that the Dems do such a job that the voters reverse field in '08.

I was just out at Florida Armory, and suddenly I have somebody else's shopping cart with $900 worth of 7.62 X 51 ammunition. WHAT is going on here??

Don't assume the best or even the mediocre.
Material costs have been rising in spikes and jumps. Reloading suplies have doubled in some respects.
How long before imports of millsurp and components are cut off? See that would only be a reasonable compromise on some of what the leadership will call for.

+1

I'm really sorry but I'm not going to participate in this "arsenal license" deal if it comes through...no way. Based on some of the "arsenal license" qualifications I've been seeing, I'd need a multi-multi-multi-license (wasn't there something about a certain number of rounds as well?...I am WAY over on that one too).

If it gets to that point I'll have 500 primers "on hand" and will keep the other 15k elsewhere...and as long as they don't shut off the GPS satellites and confiscate my shovel I should be able to retrieve them... ;)

Potentially some very scary stuff ahead and we need to keep on top of it.

I'm very well stocked on ammo and I'm at the point where I'm trying to hold onto it rather than shoot it. Also getting a lot of .22 conversions for my various platforms and will ration the good stuff until it becomes readily available again.

For any surplus ammo, that stuff comes and goes and you have to buy it hard when it's around. Got lucky with 7.62x54R the past couple of years and stocked it deep - can barely find it now even though it's a common surplus caliber. I imagine it's the same with .308 so if you run across it for a good price I'd get it - how tough would it be for those in power to cut out military surplus ammo imports? Not very IMHO.

Hey that was a good article I thought, take this quote for instance:

But, even with a new Congress, don't expect federal gun control legislation. Many new Democrats elected Tuesday are as pro-gun as Republicans who lost

And that's a NJ paper. Looks good to me!

A Slight Blip

We're seeing a slight increase in interest here in Western Nevada.

Some discussion among guys at the AR counter, wondering aloud if future legislation would make it pointless to buy one, or whether they should get it now and get grandfathered in.

Some worry about Federal law changing to mimic PRK law.

No panic to speak of.

Been watching body language and listening to comments at various "hardware" stores.

I'm watching. The masks are on for the moment. Nobody's been sworn in yet.

Pandora's box may be unlocked, but the lid hasn't been lifted.

You don't triangulate with a compass as a backup???
