Hmmm.... "Colt M16A1 semi-automatic". Not sure what they mean. The M16A1 is capable of full-auto. The rifle was probably just an AR15.

Seems pretty irresponsible to me.

Or...hmm...is it possible the reporter word-smithed the article to give the impression that the police department only has semi-auto guns while civilians are able to purchase "fully automatic, military grade AR-15s".

Yeah, why do they NEED an assault weapon anyways? I just don't understand why anyone needs those weapons that are capable of firing like billions of rounds of ammo in a minute. If only cops didn't have such high capacity clips. (lol)

Most likely the reporter had no clue what he/she was talking about, and/or was repeating a misstatement from the LEA's media liaison. Our local Sheriff's office has a PR Officer who knows jack about guns - does stuff like calling 9mm hollowpoints "armor piercing ammunition". And yet the Sheriff himself is pro 2A. Go figure.

Guys, cops should be able to have full-semi-auto AK16M1's because of all the extra training they receive. Luckily cops are also exempt from those safe storage laws too! [/SARCASM]

Incredible? does Oregon not have any laws about breaking into cars and stealing stuff out of them?!?! Oregon citizens need to get in touch with their law makers right away so that the law makers can put an end to this with their magical law preventing legislature.

Pretty standard procedure to keep shotgun and rifle in your patrol car in their locking bracket. I think the main thing to come away with from this is that, as we all know, criminals are going to get guns. Whether they need to be stolen from someone's home or a cop's patrol car.

I guess the officer is going to have to resort to the be all end all side by side 12 Gauge, ala Joe Biden now. Since we all know how hard it is to shoot an AR.

and if he cannot be trusted to hold onto a Mass Weapon OF War perhaps he shouldn't be in that profession. Fire him. Void his pension. make him pay to replace it at full market value.

meanwhile in CT: 7 cops in CT ( half the towns force) fired 41 rounds at a man holding a pellet gun ( still, from 50 feet it looks real) hitting him 13 times and killing him.

its death-by-cop almost for sure yet...to only have 13 out of 41 hit someone standing still at less than 50' bespeaks lousy gun handling by the police.

I would not be so sure on that, though it is possible. LAPD's patrol rifle program after the North Hollywood bank robbery started with USGI surplus M16A1 rifles. If the trooper in question was on a part time SWAT team or if that agency's protocols are just a little wilder than the mainstream, it is entirely possible that it was a real deal M16A1.

The trooper and Oregon taxpayers are in for world of hurt if/when that rifle is used to harm somebody. My guess is the trooper did not follow protocol, hence, contributory negligence.

The point I was making is that we cannot be sure because the report is vague and/or inaccurate.
