It's an honour to post at THR after being a reader for nearly 2 years. I am putting together a collection (proud and responsible owner of 8 guns so far) for "homeland security", hunting, and just "for-fun" purposes. My full "wish list" of calibres is as follows:

Shotgun-
12 Gauge
.410 Bore

Handgun/Levergun
454
45 Colt
45 ACP
357 Mag
10mm
7.62 Nagant
7.62 X 25
9mm
22LR/22WMR

Rifles-
50 BMG
458 Win Mag
9.3 X 62
300 Win Mag
30-06
.308
270 Win
8mmJS
7.62 X 54R
6.5 X 55 SE
7.62 X 39
30-30
.223 Rem
204 Ruger
17HMR

This is going to be a 5 year/$50k+- project (assuming King Barack doesn't succeed in outlawing some of the more fun toys on my "to-buy" list). I know there are lots of these Must Have posts but, just wanted to see if there's anything I'm missing.

I have my CCW permit and my Curio and Relic collectors licence. Always been a big firearms enthusiast thanks to my grandfather who served in WWII and served as police chief in coal country PA upon his return. Sadly, I was raised by antis and it's only at this point in my adulthood that I'm getting back into the sport and am able to afford a full fledged collection!

Looking forward to many informative chats here at THR!

Quite a range there. Should cover every land critter on the planet. Do you have a preference for type of actions for the shotguns? Do you intend to reload for any of those?

230 RN,

That's the general idea!

Have a side by side in mind for both the 410 and 12 gauge as well as an AK based Semi auto (already have a 308 Super Vepr and a Vepr I in 7.62 X 54R so, I'm sticking with that platform).

Love the look of the new CZ HCP 12 gauge pump. If/when I find one available, it'll be coming home with me. CZs just so addicting.

I don't reload -yet- but I will be. Really want to be able to take advantage of the full potential of the 9.3 X 62, 8mm, and 6.5 SE.

Welcome to THR! Smart move on the 7.62x54r semi-auto, given current events. Just remember going down the road that any firearm you have is only worth the ammunition you have stockpiled for it! I love my .410 SxS, it's probably the most practical and definitely the most used firearm I own. I intended to sell it as soon as I got it but fell in love after snagging a couple of rabbits with it.

Good luck on your shooting endeavors!

You only have .22lr listed under levergun/handgun. IMO, it should be under "Rifles" as well... hard to have a "complete" collection without at least 1 Ruger 10/22 in it. And I personally have a fondness for pump action .22lr rifles as opposed to lever action... My father has told me stories about how they were previously used at carnivals in shooting galleries, so that's fun to recreate on the range...

Good luck with your collection.

The plan for the 22lr is to pick up the 22lr/22mag Rossi Circuit Judge. I love the 45/410 version I have now.

Those who knock its accuracy simply haven't tried it.

You have good choices and a wide variety of calibers there. I went the other way, using very few calibers.

I do own a 30-30, a 5.56mm, and a .45acp but I also have dozens of others that will all shoot
12ga,
20ga,
38/357,
9mm,
or .22LR.
More than 90% of my guns can be fed by one of those 5 calibers and that makes keeping the right ammo on hand pretty easy.

Note that I do not hunt so I don't need a specific power level for a particular game animal, I buy guns I like and shoot them for fun. I like lever guns and I do own one in 30-30 (I couldn't resist tradition) but I mostly shoot the .357 and .22 versions because of ammo cost and availability.

I chose 9mm and 38/357 for my handguns (and .22 of course) because they were the most common and least expensive centerfire calibers which means more shooting per ammo dollar.

One note on your shotgun choices - I had intended to buy .410s for my daughters when they were younger but when I noticed that .410 ammo cost almost 3 times as much as 20ga I waited a few years untill they grew a bit more and went with the 20s. I don't know if that price disparity still exists or if it matters to you.

Good luck with your collection!

Thanks for all the great input so far! Yeah, I'm going the "prepared for all situations" route. I thought I'd post here to see if anyone had a pet favourite calibre that I might be neglecting.

Was wondering how long it would take someone to comment on that. Personal quirk/preference for British spelling on words like that. Then, I like hogsback stocks too. 100 percent Pennsylvanian born and bred! Did do a lot of traveling during the summer with my parents when I was growning up. Maybe that's where I got it.

Favourite calibre?
You sure your grandfather was from PA? You display an interesting familiarity with the proper spelling of those words, mate.

Well, "licence": threw me a little, too, but I myself bounce back and forth between GB spelling and Colonial spelling, so I let it go.

I knew some people originally from Canada (and one from the Upper Peninsula) who consistently "mispelled" a lot of words.

For myself, I figure I'd trust anybody until they cross me, then it's "kitty bar the door" after that.

Soooo, js8588, proceed, and bear in mind that some of us are a little suspicious of what are called "trolls" since we've been burned before.

On topic: Probably my favourite all around calibre ( :neener: ) used to be the .243 Winchester because as I got older, I got more recoil-sensitive. Nowadays, I'm more into defencive handgun shooting, and I run around town with a Smith J-frame Airweight in .38 SPL with a laser sight on it in my pocket. I'm not as "tactical" as some, so that suffices for my everyday needs, though I still like making 1/2" holes with my 1911 on the rare occasions that I get to the range nowadays.

I won't make fun of your improper spelling.

Your list is fine. I've got many of the same. I would just add that using an AR-15 platform has opened my eyes to many equally fun calibers. Get a nice lower (or full 5.56x45) such as Daniel Defense, etc, then you can get the uppers. 6.8SPC, 6.5Grendal, .300, .458Socom, 9mm - heck 7.62x25, 10mm. These are more fun than a barrel of Scots.

I frequent several political blogs and I'm quite familiar with trolls.

Licence was just a typo/misspelling! I grew up with spellcheck and it's ruined us all.

I have a pretty thick skin so, no hard feelings. Thanks for a (mostly) warm welcome!

+1; been doing the same, especially with the 6.8mm and 300 uppers. Have even gotten to the point of having a dedicated lower for each. Have a lower in search of a 7.62 x 39 upper but no joy thus far. Would also add .40 to the handgun list, but otherwise that's an impressive goal.

Which 8 do you have so far?

"Your never going to be able to feed all those mouths."

Some will end up being safe queens with just enough ammo to sight in and take out for an occasional hunt.

"Which 8 do you have so far"

Rossi Circuit Judge- 45 Colt/410
VZ 24 8mm
VZ 22 8mm
91/30 Mosin Nagant
VEPR I 7.62 X 54r
Super Vepr 308
Russian SKS
CZ 82 (will be selling/trading for a Polish Tokarev)

Next to go on layaway will be a CZ 550 in 30-06.

As to adding a 40SW to the handgun list, will just get 40 and 357 Sig barrels for the 10mm. Not that any 10mm Glocks are to be found right now thanks to our Marxist-in-Chief

I love my CZ 82. Accurate enough, even with steel case, to be a threat to bowling pins at 15 yards, small enough to be my carry gun but made out of solid steel.

I don't love 9mm Makarov. Just not enough punch for a defensive round (sorry if I'm offending the 380 fans! If it works for you, keep it).

Not a caliber (happy, THR?! Lol) with a purpose that I can justify.

Were it me, I'd make my near term purchases potential ban items. AR-15, AK, standard capacity/full capacity pistols and magazines for them.

Welcome to the forum. It matters not to me where you are from, that is quite an extensive list you have there. I might add a .338 Win Mag.
