How about a federal permit to purchase?

I just had this idea, and maybe it's got a major flaw that I don't see yet, but here goes --

In my home state of Minnesota, we've had for a lot of years a "Permit to Purchase" law that requires would-be handgun buyers to present the permit (issued by the local sheriff) when buying from FFLs. A few private sellers have been known to want to see the P2P, as well. It's been a bother, but not really an intrusion, since no records have to be kept of sales other than the ones that FFLs already keep.

My suggestion: A federal P2P. So, anyone who has one of these has been run through the NICS check. Private sellers would have to ask see the P2P, but would not be required to file any papers or take any other steps.

And here's the kicker: A higher level of the same permit would become a carry permit good in all 50 states.

Why not just run put something on everybody's license that indicates they can or cannot purchase. It gets updated with every license update.

This way the entire licensed population has it whether they shoot or not so no active list of specific population of gun owners.

No.

Permits to Purchase, FOIDs, etc. are all licences to exercise what should be your constitutional rights. They are by their very concept wrong. We should not be encoraging additional intrusion of the Federal government in this area, instead we should be fighting to remove it at the State level.

You're suggesting that you need a permit to practice a Constitutional Right.

Think about how wrong that is. Think about the wording "shall not be infringed". Explain how your state requiring you to have a permit to exercise a RIGHT is a good model for anyone?

Double plus ungood, comrade. Should we also have fed.gov permits to vote, permits to read or write, permits to worship, with fed.gov determining which/where/when we can do these things?
Naysay.

So I have to ask permission to purchase a gun?

Sounds stupid.

Really, really stupid. Especially since we just got rid if this crap in MI.

We have a permit system here in NC. It has it's advantages and means we don't have to deal with waiting periods. But really we should be able to walk into a store and buy a pistol. No note from big brother saying it's ok to own a pistol.

I have a serious problem with having to have federal permmission to exercise a constitutional right.

How about a permit to blog? Or a permit to worship as you see fit? Or a permit to be free of unreasonable searches?

As I've said in several earlier discussions on this same pathetic suggestion:

Any right that can only be exercised upon completion of affirmative conditions as required by the government is not a right.

:banghead:

REALLY? You WANT the Federal government even MORE into your private business?
WHY?

How about NO paperwork, NO permits, NO Fed involvement? Kinda like it was not that long ago. Should we have a Fed P2P for knives, cars, bats and blunt objects since more folks are killed with these?

STOP giving them even more power than what they have already stolen from the people

I'm really getting confused at WHY people are just sitting around thinking if ways they can give their rights up.

"Well hey there Feds, how'd you like some if these freedoms and rights I have? I think I've got too much!"

"Well Joe, since you're offering, sure! Whatcha offering? Don't worry, we'll just take the rest later."

80% of criminals at least, by different inmate surveys in prisons over the years, by newspaper interviews with street cops, 80% get their guns through non-dealer secondary sources, such as drug dealers, fences and othet dealers in contraband, stolen or smuggled goods. A permit system won't affect that.

80,000,000 gun owners in America.

Maybe 400,000 gun criminals.

The policing resources to regulate the legal gun owners would be better spendt on policies aimed at the criminals.

I live in Texas. We don't need no stinking permit to buy a gun. You people that want everyone to have a permit, can.....well, you know.......chris3

Like Carl says, most criminal DO NOT purchase guns from law abiding citizens
what UBC is: gate way to registration, sorry BUT... DOJ already published the memo on it.

As for a federal 'permitted' status
How would it work, either there is a list of everyone who's applied (easy to then add what they have) OR there is a list of everyone who's excluded (do you think the ACLU wouldn't sue the *stuff* out of this???? They would claim that this little mark makes second class citizens of the criminals and 'disabled'

"Explain how your state requiring you to have a permit to exercise a RIGHT is a good model for anyone? "

I am not saying my state does it right. If I could have my way, there would be no state or federal restrictions on firearms sales, as it was a century ago. I am saying that the experience in my state has been annoying but workable.

Look around you. There are tens of thousands of firearms laws all over the country, all of them enacted long ago and despite the Constitution. They are not going away. Most firearms restrictions are here to stay. A few can maybe be repealed, but only a few. We are running under bare poles before a hurricane of public opinion, whipped up by people who hate us. If we are to survive this latest storm without giving up something, we have to appear to give them something -- and in the process get something real back.

My fear is that the Congress will come up with something much worse than what I have suggested. It will be essentially unconstitutional, as are all firearms laws now. But it will pass, and it will be the law of the land.

I though a Federal permit consisted of a piece of paper that said you were at least 18 years old?

There is nothing in the Constitution that authorizes the federal government to issue firearms permits. Nothing. Zip. Nada.

2A is not a permit; it is the declaration that none shall be required.

How about a "Federal Permit" to go to the church of your choice?

Speak in a public place? Vote? Get a Jury trial?

Ever hear of the "Bill of Rights"?
