Target options for better results with irons and bad eyesight?

For some oddball reason I find that I prefer to use peep or plain iron sights for my rifle shooting. Call me odd if you must but my shooting is just for sport. And scopes simply seem too much like cheating....

But I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the target used is just as important to my accuracy as the rifle and ammo quality. We can't shoot what we can't see. Oh sure the PAPER is there but I find that it's tough to get to where I can see the spot on it to aim for.

A while back when sighting in my long range single shot I tried big sheets of paper so I'd have more luck tracking where the holes were going. In the middle of this big area I spray painted about a 12 incn red spot. Of all the targets I've tried I found that this one worked about the best so far.

So I'm wondering what sort of target you folks find works best for less than perfect vision and iron or peep sights at longer distances. Something that really works with the sights instead of fading away.

jmr, I agree. But since shooting is a sport for me it's a case of I choose to do it in one particular manner. With a scope I can certainly get better groups. But for ME there's something missing from the process. On the other hand when I shoot my big ol' rolling block with the Pedersoli long distance peep sight at 200 to 300 yards and manage a group that would be crummy by scope shooting standards it's like Christmas morning as I approach the target. I can't explain it, it just "is".

Had the same thing this past weekend. Shooting at a little rimfire flip up target at 50 yards. With my scoped Ruger 10-22 it was easy as pie to hit all four and the reset paddle. Got boring for me by the second time through. But I went on to put about 200 more rounds through my Henry lever and my BSA Martini getting roughly 3 hits out of 5 shots to do the same thing. The added challenge kept me going.

But I must admit that now I want to move that little rimfire target out to 100 yards and try it again with the scoped Ruger. Doing so might just stir things up. But it's still the lure of doing well with non magnified sights that stirs the juices in me....

The green option is interesting. I'll have to play around with different colours.

I'm thinking that the Shoot N C targets are not a bad idea for his too. I wouldn't want to pay for them for my general playing. But for my long distance rifle stuff the high contrast 8 or 12 inch black target on a big sheet of white backer paper might just do the trick. I'm going to pick up a few to try.
