Unlike some people suggest, this is not a tin hat issue. I think people have real questions about this. One question I have is why are we borrowing money from China, and other sources, to make these purchases. If we have cash, then I am all for it, heck, free bullets for everyone, but to borrow and pay interest, I would want to be sure there is a strong need and that the officers could not also be just as well trained in other ways. Takes more than making noise and pulling the trigger.

Is this something the country should be borrowing money and paying interest to pay for?

I am with you on this, I don't think ignoring this is a good idea at all. It is our job to question the government.

I've heard it said that these bullets are for training and practice.
I'd to know why they are "practicing" with hollow points.
Billions of hollow points. I think they may be planning to defend themselves against something.

Tore up are your words not mine, but this is one item on a long, long list. This a gun related site so I can't post the non gun related topics.

The government does a lot of good but if we don't get the spending under control we are going to wind up like USSR and Brazil. The debtor is the slave to the lender.

Read an article the other day(have to find it again) where dhs told border patrol agents they would not get any practice ammo, only ammo to qualify with as they were experiencing a shortage.

I don't know what to make of the DHS purchase. It keeps rearing its head up though many state these are typical purchases. What is more intriguing to me is how all of our police departments have become militarized over the past 30 years or so and how every little po-dunk town from coast to coast seems to have its own SWAT team.

Sorry. All i could find on it right now. Originally read about it buried in back of newspaper. Think tulsa world? Ill look some more

Its on national border patrol council local 2554 chapter website also. Seems they recieved an e-mail about it from dhs.

Drudge... now there's a credible source.

I'll leave it that...

The folks are not thinking about this in the right light, and asking the right question: to whom is this ammo going to be used on? This ammo is made to kill; period. It is not to train with...

The Feds are creating an arsenal for a nation police state. No one is coming over the boarder with all the guns and ammo being made and sold here in the USA; it ain't happening. Could you imagine the logistical nightmare it would take, for even a block of countries, to come to our shores to over run this citizenry, let alone our armed forces?

This is the brilliance of those in Washington DC, and our hard earned money going to waste. Funny thing is, think of the logisical nightmare of keeping it safe and moving it to where it will be needed. Ain't going to happen without our consent...

Welcome to the land of Liberalism, and the inability to think things through.

New personal rule, "If the topic contains DHS+Ammunition", just drive on.

Yeah, I agree, Steve. No matter how many times you explain to people with factual evidence that there's not really a story here, people keep dragging it up. The order is not larger than in the past, where did you find something saying it's all HPs, and DHS trains a heck of a lot of people so they have a need for the ammo. I just know I'm going to hear a response along the lines of "well what about the 1,600 MRAPs?" Which anyone who can do some fact checking knows was a misreported order for the Marines and not DHS. Seriously guys, the government is not preparing for a war against the US populace...there's really not a story here no matter how much you might want to fantasize about it. In terms of wasteful government expenditure, this isn't even close to the top 100 so it's really a non issue.

Must be enough for some to bring it to the floor tomorrow...

Blurp:

Senate and House Republicans are set to introduce a joint bill Friday that would significantly limit the amount of ammunition that federal agencies are permitted to purchase and stockpile over the next six months.

The bill, authored by Sen. Jim Inhofe (R., Okla.) and Rep. Frank Lucas (R., Okla.), comes as numerous lawmakers across Capitol Hill have expressed concern that certain federal agencies, such as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), are stockpiling high quantities of ammunition.

DHS, for instance, has placed two-years worth of ammunition, or nearly 247 million rounds, in its inventory.

Inhofe said these agencies must provide greater “transparency and accountability” over its ammo stockpiles so that the public can learn about its precise use.

AMMO Act?

Seems this is going to the floor tomorrow. Wonder how fast this will be buried? Some seem to think nothing of DHS having so much stockpiled but I do. Either way I support this especially since we are borrowing money to buy it.

Riiigght!;)

Kids I just HAVE to laugh. For 10 years I been saying we don't have to worry about the Second, we have to worry about ammo.
It WILL get worse. Think law/executive order banning ALL foreign ammo, and a stiff tax on the remaining domestic ammo.
Constitution doesn't say a thing about cheap ammo does it?

I posted this because it has been a topic in the past with many posts on both sides of the issue. I did not, nor are most saying the govenment is trying to take us over. You must have dug that up from an old post.

What is relevant is the pro-gun senators are bringing this up in congressional hearings. Again, this is not tin foil hat nuts. Fox news, US Congress saying it is wasteful spending from a bankrupt country. When you are banko, every dollar matters. Overspending on pork items 101 through 1000 is the problem and so is the attitude that we can afford it cause we can't. Flat broke and in debt.

It is also of interest because in an earlier post it was asserted that there were 600 rounds per agent per year but we were unable to verify that number. This article provides a different and possibly more accurate number. It also provides a frame of reference to other ammo users.

It is not about conspiracy as you incorrectly suggest but as stated in the article

"This is not about conspiracy theories, this is about good government," Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.

I am extremely proud to have such a great guy like Jim Inhoffe representing my state. I used to b able to say the same about Tom turncoat Coburn, but I cant anymore.
