I need some advice on co-witnessing, and whether I can even do it under my particular circumstances.
I have a flat-top AR with a Mapgul plastic folding BUIS and a Midwest Industries gas block folding front sight. I sighted them in a few months ago, and later on I added a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot, mounted in between the two (of course.) The red dot is going to be my primary sight. I’m using the gun for fun shooting, and maybe home defense if the need really arose. But I am not shipping out to Syria with it.
If I had my druthers, I would like to “co-witness” the iron sights; that is, when I flip them up, I‘d like to see them roughly through the center of the red dot sight when it’s turned off. I do not care if the sights exactly align with the red dot, just so they are roughly in the center of the glass.
My problem is that currently, when I flip them up, they are barely visible through the top of the red dot glass.
Obviously, I could raise the red dot and resolve the issue. But I don’t want do, as I like the cheek weld I have now with it.
So then I thought, “I’ll lower the rear sight aperture and raise up the front sight post, and that will move the whole iron sight picture down, toward the center of the red dot glass.”
But the more I think about it, that makes no sense and won’t work.
BTW, the red dot has a UTG mount that is “semi quick release,” so in a real situation I can still remove it by hand.
What do you guys think? Is there a way to get the iron sights to cowitness with my red dot?
Thanks
