So, I went to a defensive pistol class last weekend. Had a great time, learned a lot. I started with my Remington 1911, then after major blistering, I swapped to my M&P.

Safety did not work well for me, I can rock the 1911 safety not problem, the one on the M&P, not so much. So, I removed it today. I am liking the gun better with no safety. Will have to look into the hole blocking stuff for M&P's with removed safeties.

The problem is that the M&P safety is not in the same place as a 1911 safety. I don't have a safety on my M&P for this reason.

Many guns are carried without a safety. As long as you are mindful of your trigger finger and use caution while holstering, you should be fine.

I took a pistol class this weekend, shooting my 1911, and then my M&P. The safety on the M&P tripped me up a couple of times. I had no problems with the 1911 safety. When I was tired, hot as heck and manipulating the M&P, there seemed to be some difference in the safety location/function that was messing me up.

Of course, trigger finger control is always important. I am liking the M&P more now without the safety. I was offered a good discount on a slightly used M&P with no safety... But I thought I wanted the safety. Oh well.

Why not just not use it? Unless it hits your thumb while shooting or something, it seems like a benign feature. The gun still has its "drop" safeties.
I could, but it would be possible for the safety to get engaged. If I don't train with the safety, I would be staring at the gun trying to figure out what was wrong with it. I am a KISS person, because Mr. Murphy seems to like me. I am going to pick up some of the 'plugs' to cover the open part of the receiver.

I like it better without the safety, and if I ever want it back, it is very easy to put back in. Personal preference I guess.

*Shrug* I have seen safeties on some pistols taken off and asked the same question. The response I often got deals with frame mounted safeties instead of slide mounted. Frame ones are "in the way" if they aren't being used.

Why keep something you don't use, but can stop your pistol from firing... Just my thoughts.

Only two reasons I can think of. 1) They thought they would like it and didn't try it out before hand. 2) There was no other option for some reason. For example, in this latest gun panic. Suppose someone wanted to buy a Smith M&P but the only one they could find was the one with the safety. If you want it enough, some will overlook small(ish) details like that to get a firearm they want.

I bought this gun long before the crazyness. They had both guns, the one with the safety is the one I chose. I have now rectified that mistake. :)

It's not in the same place???...I thought it was...having never held one, I'll have to take the word of those of you who have tried it but the pics look like it's in a similar position...

I don't think I would have bought one with the safety as I don't think it needs one (I don't think the original design included it) but if the price were right, I might be tempted to pick one up that has it...

The safety is in a similar position but not the same.

I find riding the thumb safety on a 1911 to be comfortable but not at all on an M&P. My guess is that sooner or later someone will introduce something for the M&P that will improve this.

If you don't want you're safety I'll take it! I got a core recently and would like to install one on it if i have the compatible sear.

Great link "9", much to order in the future. I wanted the apex kit, and can compare the differences there. Also several other usefull parts.

I don't think you can add the safety to a M&P that didn't originally come with the safety- something about the frame. The safety on a M&P is a "sear safety" and not a "slide" safety, removing it is no big deal. Sometimes you can get the "plugs" from S&W to fill the holes.

Within the same frame size, the frames are identical, between the ones with and without the thumb safety. That is why the ones without the safety have a plug in the frame...which can fall out during a detail strip.

Replacement plugs are available at the link I provided for $2 each

There have been some frame changes though. (and maybe some sear block changes..?)

For ex., go to page 8 in this link and you'll notice there isn't a cut out in the frame for the safety.

My 9c was bought in 2009. Mine has the safety and my sear block looks like the one on page 8.

The safety on the M&P always looked to me as an after thought. It is too prevalant on the gun, "it just stands out way too much" IMO. Too easy to mistakenlly hit while doing everyday chores.
I think if they would have placed it flatter against the frame, it would be more enticing. For me, even though I could go either way on it, but I prefer not to have the current one, for the reasons I mentioned.

I got 4 M&P's none have the safety on them but I do like them on my 1911's also put the APEX trigger on my M&P's works much better

I should have added, "within the current frame revision"

Ahhhh... gotcha.

I have to MP9c with the safety. I wanted it as I have a BHP.

I agree with you. Its like having batwings.

I actually got 2 extra safeties from S&W and shaved them down.... but I haven't swapped either in yet.

I assume I need #5 and 6 from this link 9mm. http://www.speedshooterspecialties.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=103_90_115&sort=20a&page=4

Not trying to be picky, just want to be sure I am getting the correct parts. I think the one you linked to was for the CA key type safety?

Again, thanks for that link, they have some good stuff at some good prices.

I have not shot the M&P since I removed the safety (9mm be scarce here) but I am liking how it feels when I practice drawing and dry presses.
