AR in 308 suggestions for under $1,500

M&P-10-

Good- Forged 7075 upper & lower receivers. 4140 melonited barrel with 1:10 R5 rifling. All controls ambidextrous. M4 adjustable stock. Uses 20 rnd PMags. Light for a 308 AR, S&W claims 7.7 lbs. Actual weight with the M4 buttstock swapped out for a CTR, A2 grip for a Magpul MOE, sling and Aimpoint H1 added, no ammo no mag is 8.5 lbs. a fully loaded Magpul mag brings it up to 10 lbs

Bad- Base model doesn't come with sights, some come only with one 10 round mag. Flash hider is much too long

Ugly- With the added recoil of the 308, the M4 stock is uncomfortable and will grow more so with each shot. Change it for something like the Magpul MOE or CTR with the thick recoil pad

Retail price for base model- $1600. Often sells for less. S&W also makes the M&P-10 available with all Magpul furniture and sights but it retails at $1800 or so and is harder to find

Overall, it's the best value of any 308 AR on the market. Get one, you'll like it. If you don't, you can sell it fast

Another vote for the LAR-8. It uses FAL mags so if you already have one of those it's nice. I don't have experience with the other 308 AR guns though.
I like that mine has the full A2 stock on a 308. Slip on a limbsaver and it's nice. Accuracy is <1 moa with good ammo (FGMM or handloads) in my 16" gun. The bull barrel versions I've seen tested in magazines seem to shoot way better (sounds like .5 MOA is the norm).
Keep in mind any AR in 308 is going to be heavy. No way around it. It's a whole different animal than a 5.56 platform.
I doubt prices will go up this year or next, more likely down. Thankfully the anti-gun frenzy seems to have died down. But you never know when some idiot will do something stupid and start it up again for the people that blame inanimate objects for the acts of people.

pick the one where the mags are cheap and plentiful

The DPMSs are nice, and a good bit less expensive.

I've heard of guys finding them now for just over $1300. I paid $1500 out the door, locally. You can wait & maybe prices will go down. Or they may go back up . Start shopping now and buy one as soon as one comes up for a good price. It's worth it

If my mp10 came with a lightweight floating handguard and slightly more compact brake it would be about perfect. Also I upgraded the trigger to the cmmg two stage. Bone stock it is ok. MOA accuracy is possible.
Once upon a time I matched an Armalite ar10 (t) carbine upper with an armalite collapsible stock lower with nm trig. For a little over 1500. Very nice 16" unit.

Not sure if you're dead set on an AR, but you might want to look at FN Herstal's FNAR. Its guaranteed to shoot Sub MOA out of the box with factory ammo (federal gold metal match 168 grain and i believe the price point on them is less than an AR. http://www.fnhusa.com/l/products/commercial/autoloading-rifles/fnar-heavy/

The FNAR is simply a Browning BAR dragged tactical parts bin

Also if not deadset on on AR, the Vepr .308 and M1a are both worth consideration.

I'll throw a vote in for the VEPR in .308- not an AR at all, but a very good rifle, far less in price.

It does eat brass when unmodified, however.

I bought one about five years ago and aside from one of the two mags it came with being bad it runs well. However, a friend bought one a few months back that was a complete POS. The bolt had tool marks everywhere and was so out of spec it would bind when spun by hand in the carrier. It failed to eject every single round fired. He sent it off to DPMS for repair with the intent of selling as soon as it was fixed. He bought the SW and has been thrilled with it.

Is there anything special about the gas block of the M&P-10? How hard would it be to install a low-profile gas block and free-float forearm?

I only know from mine and one a buddy has just like it. We have had no issues with them. The one thing I did notice is accuracy greatly improved with hand loading. For the price this is a great rifle. I have more money involved in the glass and mount than I do the rifle.

+1 for DPMS and Rock River Arms. I prefer RRA slightly to DPMS but I still wouldn't hesitate to buy a DPMS.

It is a very good value. You should buy the one I have listed in the classifieds.

Buddy picked up an MP-10 recently. Nice rifle (I talked him into it). He got it for about $1200 a few months ago, so I'd think you could beat that price now. Personally I went with a DPMS 308 in Oct. Love it, that gun is a tack driver. Cool thing is, both guns run pmags (if you can find 308 pmags now, midway does have DPMS metal mags in stock and they fit both).

Only downside I've heard (not checked or seen) is that some parts are "not standard" (like there is such a thing with AR-10 style guns). Heard on one forum, some parts are specific to S&W. Would look into that before getting one.

+1 there are several manufacturers that think they have the best design so look into it. There is a thread on ARFcom about what's interchangeable with what.
The RRA came out when FAL mags were plentiful and inexpensive but I think I paid almost $18 each for the last ones (they all work thankfully) buying 10 at a time.
One thing I always hear is on a DPMS (besides that they are accurate) is you HAVE to get an aftermarket trigger upgrade as the stock one is awful. So factor in another c-note or two. The RRA has a pretty nice factory 2 stage trigger.
