My Birthday Gift

Bummer :( . I left work in May with a brand new never worn pair of Red Wing 6700 slip on work boots in 11 1/2 wide. I'll never have a use for them, my old pair is still like new.

Ron
Those are nice. A little too small for me though, and no ankle support. My work boots are typically military steel toes. My current pair are the last pair of desert boots I was issued.

Arch,
You know, it's your birthday - have her get you the shoes and you get yourself the Glock 17.
That's what I would do, but, probably not a 17, I already have 2. Maybe a Lone Wolf extended, threaded barrel for the 34 if they make that. Or, an extended, threaded barrel for the 22? Hmmm, decisions. My birthday is coming up in October.

Seriously now, I'm wearing dress shoes for work and the cheapos were aggravating the tendonitis on my foot. I had to get some higher end (more arch support) brand and it makes a huge difference.

Okay, just found out my birthday gift are a pair of really nice Johnson & Murphy brown lace ups for $135, on sale and a pair of black Bostonians for $150. I know, that seems like a lot of money, but both pairs are typically 30-35% higher. I'm a lawyer by trade (I know, commence the ribbing now) and really need to look good.

But guess what I don't have? Take a guess. Hint: it's not on my hip, nor in my safe.:banghead:

Just chase down an ambulance and get your new glock.

LOL!!!! Holy bananas, that is funny! I'm going to use that line from now on whenever I hear a fellow lawyer complaining about money. "Oh just shut up and go chase down a ambulance, will ya!". funny....

I remember when men used to be men. This is sad. When I want something I get it. My wifes money she earns is hers, mine is mine. If the bills are paid, then whats the problem? If she buys the shoes for you with her money, and you don't want em, take them back and get the Glock. If you are paying for it anyway, get the Glock. Its your birthday not hers. 363 days a year, it is no doubt your jobs to make eachother happy. 1 day a year, its her job to make you happy. Do you tell her what she is allowed to get on her Birthday (within financial limitations)? Or do you get her what she wants? I think the answer to your question is the answer to the one I just asked you.

A happy wife = a happy husband. But a happy controlling wife that dictates everything a man does down to his birthday presents does not make a happy husband.

I also do not need or want a Glock 17.

Whoow, chill out Captain Awesome! Take a breather. Have a glass of cold water friend. No "controlling wife" on my side. There's this thing called "money", and not everyone has a lot of it. Hence, on that all important "one day" (which, for some odd reason, I really don't find to be all that special), not everyone can afford to drop mny hundreds, maybe it excess of a grand. I really kind of want a Glock 17. But I really did need some nice new shoes. Kind of wanted them too. Went with the shoes. God bless my wife, who steered me in the right direction (again).:)

Oh brother, I grew up around men that actually were what John Wayne pretended to be. My grandmother kept their checkbooks on a tight leash.

OK, the bills are paid... Do you have enough reserve for a year's living expenses in case of catastrophic accident? Or the city people equivalent of a heavy drought or flooding? Money in the bank doesn't have to be fed and doesn't charge rent. A Glock's appetite on the other hand...

I'm good for about 6 months. It's hard getting to a year, with kids and the expenses of running a business. But I think your 1 year standard is pretty good thinking.

I was refering in part to posts others made, not entirely you. I am chilled friend. I just see more and more where the women wear the pants in a relationship/marriage and a lot of the posts here prove it.

John Wayne has nothing to do with my opinion on the matter. And to make matters worse, someone actually flames me for having a marriage of mutual respect where I dont bow down to my wifes will, nor does she to mine, and we discuss things that aren't birthday related, we both want each other to have the things we want..... Didnt realize that was worthy of an "OH brother" and remember I did say within financial limitations whatever yours might be. Money in the bank is also not making you any more money, isn't protecting you from bad guys, and generally is depreciating at an alarming rate these days. No mam, money in the bank is not everything it is cracked up to be. I would much rather enjoy it or invest it so I have more later. You shouldnt dispense anti gun buying financial advice on a gun forum, or tell the OP that he has neither a heart nor morals, even if it was joking.

I am sorry, It just originally sounded like she might have been shoving the shoes down your throat

Glad you got what you wanted, personally if I got shoes for a birthday, unless they were a GREAT pair of hunting boots ( like kenetreks or lowas or something like that) I would have a frown on stretching all the way to the ground. Different line of thinking than you though, and its your birthday. Happy birthday sir.

Get yourself some black and white Chuck Taylors. That should cover all your dress shoe needs. (I was married in black and white checkered vans) That should leave you some "Glock fundage"!!

The last time my wife told me to get a new pair of dress shoes, I came home with a pair of Johnston & Murphy' alligator cap toe lace up, got them on sale for $765.00, she didn't say a whole lot. My next B-Day, I bought a S&W K38 4" Combat Masterpiece at the gun show, $450.00, got the best of both deals.... she even bought me a B-Day card too. lol :fire:

If you have a good defensive handgun already than the the Glock is a want & not a need as many have suggested. If you don't, than it does rise to the level of a need IMHO.

However, with a happy and supportive wife, a skilled profession and looking good in spiffy new shoes you ought to be able to earn that new Glock in short order. :D

I'm going under the assumption Archangel is like some other persons I could mention and has been wearing the same pair of dress shoes since he graduated high school. I'm also assuming they are in a position where social situations where dress shoes are appropriate is a benefit to the family.

It's not always about being controlling, sometimes it's a matter of cost/benefit. My Grandfather was the type that would have thought nothing of going into the board of trade in overalls and manure coated boots. My Grandmother was 'controlling' enough to force him to buy dress slacks, jacket and a nice pair of shoes for the occasion of dealing with banks and customers. Due to her 'controlling' the 240 acres left to him by his father grew to almost a thousand acres and this was during the Reagan years when most family farms went to the auction block. Grandpa 'controlled' her by buying cattle that improve the diary herd rather than the new kitchen set and upgrading the equipment in the 60's rather than the massive remodel of the house.

Neither you or I are sitting at their kitchen table when Archangel and wife discuss finances. Perhaps she is as controlling as you claim, perhaps it's a meeting of the minds comparing present desires with future needs and benefit. No way of knowing.

That said, when Dave left the army he claims I forced him to come to the farm and work for my brother. He's always using that cute little straight smile of his when he says it. If you believe I could force him to do anything I have a bit of property on the Monon basin I'd like to sell you complete with water rights at the low, low price of 3 thousand an acre.

Dress shoes? Dress shoes? My next footwear purchase will be either a better fitting pair steel-toed work boots or a pair surplus store combat boots if the tread on the old ones crack. If it comes to "dressy", I might go to Mahoney Outdoors for a fancy-schmancy pair of hiking boots.

Shoes, and appearances in general, can be important for lawyers. I had this co-worker who served on a jury comment about one of the lawyers. She said this lawyer had a canvas briefcase, so she asked if that person was a "real" lawyer. I was about to ask her "as opposed to what, a fake lawyer?".
