I would like to buy an AR-10 for target shooting and the occasional hog hunt in TX. I'm thinking of something with a 20-22" barrel for long range accuracy. That is pretty much my only requirement.

Budget is $1500 for now.... Have been considering armalite or DPMS. I also heard that S&W is coming out with a new AR-10 soon that is supposed to be awesome. What do you guys recommend??

How long a range? 18" is not bad AT ALL for accuracy. An AR style rifle in .308/7.62 with a 20-22" barrel is going to be heavy... My S&W M&P-10 is pretty light without a scope, and careful scope selection helps keep the weight down.

I recently acquired the Sig Sauer 716 patrol and it is built like a tank. It is more accurate than I am out to 300 yards at the range and I highly recommend it.

For $1700 I don't think you can find its equal.

Unless you want to waste over a thousand get a DPMS or the remington R25 which is a DPMS with a rem 20 inch medium barrel on it. Mine shoots 1/2" groups

I got the Sportical DPMS at Wal-Mart for under a grand. It is heavy, but a nice rifle and I am happy with it. It did not come with any sights, so you have to pick what you want sight wise.

I'd go with an m&p 10. They are a good quality and with the melonited barrel will be more accurate than the armalite with the chrome lined barrel. Both the melonite and the chrome lined will last way longer than the non treated barrel on the dpms and for not much more price wise.

I bought a M&P10 and have been nothing but pleased with it. I wanted it mainly for deer hunting but it will take a big variety of game. I mounted a Nikon ProStaff and it works well on it. Very accurate out to 200 and I haven't tried it further out because that is the furthest distance at my club. Mine is more accurate with the 168gr bullets.

I just posted a DPMS in the for sale section, Really nice rifle. Only selling because I got one of the new FD308's from F&D Defense.

if you can afford enough .308 ammo to wear out the barrel buying another barrel is real easy

My RRA 308 Predator was more accurate than my DPMS AP4, Tac-20, and 24" bull. DPMS were all 308's. Not trying to start a "vs" war but just stating my experience.

YMMV

So far to my knowledge no one has commented on the accuracy of the seemingly sainted SW MP 10 which is unproven and the new kid on the block. My Rem. R25 which is a DPMS with Rem 20 inch barrel shoots like a bolt action

I have the DPMS LR 308 that i've upgraded (IMHO) to 338 Federal which I love.

I've just gotten the Ruger SR 762 and after a trigger replacement (Timney 308) and a Leupold Patrol with Leupold mount I am extremely happy with the final result.

The S&W is intriguing and the lightest available (direct impingement).

So the M&P S&W cost $1600, doesn't come with the better magpul furniture, doesn't have a chrome lined barrel, doesn't have great trigger, doesn't come with a 20 round pmag, doesnt come with a quad rail, doesnt come with quad rail covers, and doesn't have Troy fold down sights.

My Sig comes with all that for $1700, but I do miss out on a crappy plastic case. Why is the M&P a better deal?

Compare the magazine systems-
ArmaLite AR-10
Original/modified M14,"STEEL MAGAZINES"-Gen1
Re-tooled to eliminate contract M14 junk w/"STEEL MAGAZINES"-GenII

There is a reason our fed gov't doesn't contract "PLASTIC" links/belts for machine guns!!

If your mouse/rat gun accepts plastic magazines-your loss.

I'm seeing M&P 10's start in the $1200 - $1300 range (some with buy it now prices ~$1300) on GB. For me that would be the big plus, getting a .308 AR for basically what Colt 6920's were going for several years ago. Also, S&W makes excellent rifles and the M&P 10 is pretty light for what it is, probably in part due to the lack of rails and whatnot.

Here is my DPMS. I thought the M14 was heavy, while carrying in Germany (66-67), but this has some "hips".

I have about 2000 rds, hand loaded, using 150GR. FMJ and RL15 powder. Just about broke the bank.

For $300-400 extra and one more pound, I'm glad I bought twice the rifle. The M&P is a starter basic .308 comparable to the DPMS. The Sig is comparable to the LWRC for half the cost.
