CZ75B. No need to look further. Well priced and VERY accurate. Also built better than almost any others mentions. Accuracy however, sets them apart from the othes. Amazing.

If you want something for marksmanship development and you don't think you can find a steady source of .22lr ammo, can I suggest you get a air pistol and a pellet trap? Before I had a house, my apartment had a long hall, which was perfect for air pistol and air rifle shooting.

If you are interested in marksmanship development and want less felt recoil from a firearm, you probably want a larger, heavier pistol. My daughter likes shooting .38 Specials through my 5 inch barreled S&W Model 27, but hates shooting .32 acp's through my Walther PP.

I absolutely adore my CZ75 but I carry it daily too.

If I were to buy strictly a range gun I would concur with the others that said Witness Elite Match. If you can afford more than step up to a CZ Tactical Sport or a Witness Elite Limited*

* just saw you Budget.

Elite Match it is.

Add a .22 conversion later for extra fun when ammo returns.

I spent $515.00 for a Springfield 9mm XD tactical with 5" barrel (from Buds). She has a sweet trigger and no recoil to speak of. You could shoot hundreds of rounds a day with no problem

Ya I would also say a CZ but the 75 SAO model for a range gun or if u want to go above ur price range a cz sp-01 converted to SAO would have even less recoil.

I've been very happy with my FNH products. The FNX-40 (also comes in 9mm) is a very comfy striker fired gun. My FNX-9 has become my bedstand gun and my go-to high capacity carry pistol.

I've always wondered, in a thread like this, how the OP EVER knows more after the thread has died than he did when he started the thread.

You'll always get eleventy-zillion different recommendations. How do you now whose advice to follow?

The real answer was given in post #5:

You really need to go to a range that has rentals and try out some to see what fits you best and you shoot best.

I have several 9mm Pistols.

glock 17 2nd gen, with 4" & 6" barrels

Sig sp2022

Ruger SR9

Sig p226.

For a range/targets shooter, I would chose the Glock, go for a 34. It is setup to be very accurate, and is tailor made for IDPA Shooting!

Trust me, after a year or so of range/taret shooting you'll get curious about IDPA shooting. the 34 is perfect for that.

enjoy

be safe

A good 9mm for the range? On a budget?

Smith & Wesson 3rd gen. 5906. Accurate , stainless steel = great looks and good weight for stability and mild recoil. Great fun to shoot and absolutely reliable. I bought 2 of them for $700. LEO carries ; Flitzed the bejeebers out of 'em , added new grips for about $25 each , they are beautiful!

Best warranty in the business..

Hi-Point C9. Low priced, American made and great warranty. Bought mine in November 2012 for $149.95 online. 342 rounds fmj fired for 1 double-feed and 2 fail-to-feed minor malfunctions. Soft recoil, good sights and easy to clean. :D

EAA Elite Match---besides being a great gun you also have the ablility to get conversion kits for it. You could take your 9 and get a kit for 40 S&W, 38 Super, 45ACP and I believe 10mm as well.

I just got one in 40 yesterday, and put a hundred or so rounds thru it this morning. What a great shooting gun.................I think it just became the new favorite!!!!

If you do decide to go with an XD or XDM spend the cash and get a PRP drop in trigger---well worth the money. I have an XDm 9mm 3.8" compact and the trigger is unbelievable now.

I highly suggest taking a look at the Taurus 92. It is great. Weighting more than a poly 9mm makes it a very pleasant shooter at the range.

I say - get a Beretta 92. I love mine :)

I would stay with the new Walther, or a CZ in a full size gun, or the XDM compact with the 13 and 19 round mag, "you can use for both".
