Army opposes legislation to release surplus pistols to CMP?

"This provision...could potentially put nearly 100,000 untraceable .45-caliber military-grade handguns on our streets"

hrmm....i was unaware the military removes the serial number from their guns...and apparently Army .45 are more dangerous than civilian .45s........

Here's a link to the Army's "white paper" on the subject:

http://big.assets.huffingtonpost.com/CMPInfoPaper11May.pdf

The Army and DOJ have concerns with this amendment and believe additional study is necessary. Specifically, the Army is concerned about loss of accountability of weapons after transfer to CMP; expanding the scope of CMP’s mission to include handguns; and the potential negative impacts on public safety from the large amount of semi-automatic and concealable pistols that will be released for public purchase.

It goes on for two pages.

I read somewhere that it has cost the taxpayers over $200K a year to "store" these worn out old 1911s that "we the people" paid for and for which the Army has no apparent use for but wants to keep them anyway.:scrutiny:

Wow......just wow.

How is this coming from the DOD? Isn't this tantamount to a public political statement? That has always been verboten among the U.S. officer corps, no?

I find it to be interesting that the DCM (Director of Civilian Marksmanship that preceded the CMP) distributed surplus 1911 pistols and M1 Carbines - as well as 1903 Springfield rifles - without any problems. Didn't they keep records? Absolutely! Of course they did.

And while we're on the subject, do they honestly believe that following both World War One and Two substantial numbers didn't come home when the G.I.'s did? If this caused a problem it was little noticed.

I suspect that the Army's position is because of the intervention of certain civilians. :fire:

Also....100,000? And here I thought it was more like 1000. Heck, if there are 100,000 that means I stand a chance of snagging one! Jeez I hope this gets through....

How exactly is a full size .45 more conceal-able than the compacts and sub compacts that line the shelves of the thousands of gun stores around the country?
How?

Politics. Remember who is president now. He told them to do this and so they did.

Be patient folks, in a year and a half or so Obama will just be a bad memory as someone else takes office.

Just make sure it ain't Hillary 'heroine of Benghazi' Clinton and her Clinton Foundation ripoff artist husband 'Dollar' Bill Clinton.

From what I've seen, Army officers tend to assume anyone who isn't an officer is an idiot.

This feeling seems to get deeper the higher up the ladder you go.

It doesn't surprise me the Army would have a problem with this.

And untraceable is a bad thing because...?

Oh, wait, most handguns are untraceable already and we're at a 20 year low on homicides!

The Army noted in its opposition that the Department of Justice has tracked an average of nearly 1,800 Colt .45s being used in crimes every year over the last decade, including a significant but unspecified number of those guns that were originally military surplus.

OK, if a spokesman is using a phrase like "a significant but unspecified number", then that's a clue that he's full of horse manure.

Methinks the Army has lost track of the roots and historical significance of the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

Army, Navy, DOJ, EPA, FBI, etc. They all take orders from the same man, and he doesn't like the idea of anyone not under his direct control having guns.

They are more concerned with sexual harassment than making shooters out of the public. Just do a little digging, I bet new officers get more of that than weapons training.

First of all it is Huffington Post. I don't and won't believe single word they type about anything gun related.

Second the Army takes ONLY 2 pages to say they are against transferring 1911s to CMP? I have never seen the Army do anything in only two pages. Not to mention there is no signature or unit associated? I am calling foul on this "white paper." Looks more like something drawn by whining left leaners. The Army knows as well as anyone that firearms transferred to the CMP are no "untraceable."

You mean to say the 1911 pistols would be even more untraceable than the several hundred thousand M1 Garands and other assorted long guns the DCM/CMP have already released to the civilian market?
How exactly does that work?

Jim K has got it right: the higher up the Federal food chain you go the more likely you are to be a 'Yes Person" to whoever is calling the shots (pun intended), in the White House.

It was probably written by a DOJ or Dept of the Army civilian.

Concur

Remember who is president now. He told them to do this and so they did.

Probably how it happened.

A pox on all that voted for him.

There's been some controversy here in Texas about the "Jade Helm" military exercises - the Army has been dismayed, saying "We're YOUR army - you can TRUST us!!"

Then some cr@p like this comes along. :banghead:

Why in hades are they even weighing in on this, unless it's at the behest of the Commander-In-Chief?

Yeah, we trust our army - but not it's leader or his appointees!

Wow, over 100,000 1911's somehow escaped Clinton having them ground into scrap. That program wasn't as successful as they said it was. Maybe all those M14's are still around, too.

All that happened during the demise of the DCM when Clinton ordered them shipped to be destroyed. It took Congress months to get around instituting the CMP, and later the press mills were crowing about destroying all the military weapons. Which, apparently, didn't happen as much as they led us to believe.

Too bad we don't have truly investigative journalists to pursue it. Of course, it would likely just prove someone was lying, again, and that's nothing new.

It also goes to show that some people are very afraid of OWG's getting more concealable full frame 1911's. Since they are the ones who can carry them concealed better than most.

Even me. :D

How times change. My memory isn't what it once was, but I'm sure I bought a .45 1911 through DCM back in about 1963.
