Del Carmine Whitetails.
Seems I have stirred up a hornets nest elsewhere at the mere mention of the above deer. Yes I did successfully hunt them on THE del carmine mountain. As I knew it, it was not a range, it was a solitary mountain. The white tail in question is NOT a crossbreed. It is a certified subspieces of the North American white tail, one of 30, at last count. I am not a biologist or expert of any kind but this what I have learned.
I know that at this time this kind of hunt is very expensive for wealthy Safari Club International types who already have one or two of every animal in the universe on their walls. So there is stiff competition for said trophys. I find claims all over the internet by guides, guide companies, and misinformed others to possessing the no. 1 head. The area, almost immediately opposite Big Bend National Park in Texas, in Mexico, has many south Texas smallish whitetails.
Authentic Del Carmine subspecies, in the past, were found ONLY on that mountain. 40 to 50 yrs ago no one paid any attention to them. To prove you actually have one, you must take it on THE mountain, or today have a DNA test done. This is what the Park biologist told me, confirmed by the National Park Service Regional biologist in Santa Fe New Mexico, by the name of Ro Waurer. He published several papers and you may still be able to review them in the NPS library they have there.
This was just after the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City where the government had mowed down a dozen or so protesters in the streets. Even the rural gendarmes were getting a little nervous. They patrolled semi regularly in their green Ford Jeeps with the red Mexican Eagle (when they did not steal the gas for themselves.) Since I was known to be able to help them out in a tough spot me and my firearm were not a problem. But that was when ownership of firearms in Mexico was just starting to be a sticky wicket.
Gotta do the evening walk, docs orders, wifes too, then hit the hay. Next chance I will tell you about the hunt, impossibly expensive today for a working man, and you may judge for yourself what I say. One thing for sure, I managed the only one ever taken with a Smith and Wesson model 58 41 magnum.
