While crime stories involving shootings don't have much of a place on THR this one has an interesting twist. It involves a former CNN anchor (we're all familiar with CNN's Anti 2A policy) and her husband using his carry gun to defend themselves when they were attacked at a hotel they'd checked into while traveling. The fact that they both have carry permits and both had carry guns is not lost on us, but is a bit surprising when associated with any CNN employee. Note the closing sentence.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A cross-country road trip got derailed for a former CNN anchor and her husband after a would-be robber forced his way into their motel room and a shootout ensued.

Lynne Russell told reporters Wednesday that her husband, Chuck de Caro, decided to stop at a Motel 6 on Albuquerque’s western edge because they were tired after a long day of traveling. When she went out to the car to get something and returned to the room, a man was at the door with a handgun.

“He pushed me into the room and that’s when my husband came out of the shower and saw what was happening,” Russell told Albuquerque station KOB-TV. “We tried to calm him, confuse him and do everything we could do to just come out of it in one piece.”

After grabbing her husband’s briefcase, the man started shooting at de Caro. Russell ducked behind the furniture and de Caro fired back, hitting the man.

The robber was killed and de Caro was wounded.

“It was a gun battle, and Chuck was bleeding heavily, but he didn’t stop firing because the man was firing on him,” Russell told The New York Post.

In a telephone interview with The Associated Press, Russell said her husband was shot three times and was recovering at a hospital but she did not immediately know his condition.

“He’s in a lot of pain,” she said. “He took three shots, including a couple to the abdomen. But magically, his organs were not affected.

"He’s my hero. He saved my life,” Russell added.

Albuquerque police did not release names of those involved, and a spokesman, Officer Tanner Tixier, said it appeared to be a random robbery attempt.

“They weren’t targeted for who they were,” Tixier said. “We believe the offender didn’t realize the victim’s husband was in the motel (room). He believed he had an easy target. That turned out not to be the case obviously.”

Russell said the shooting happened four days into the couple’s trip.

Russell was a prominent figure in CNN’s groundbreaking foray into around-the-clock news, serving as an anchor from 1983 to 2001. She was one of the first anchors hired at CNN Headline News, then called CNN 2, after it went on the air in 1982.

Ted Kavanau, a manager for CNN at its founding and founding president of CNN Headline news, said Russell told him the robber staggered out of the room.

Police officers responding to a report of shots fired found the body in a parking lot.

A former special forces officer, de Caro said he called upon his training to protect his wife.

“I was determined to save my dream girl’s life — even if it cost my own,” he told The Post.

Both de Caro and Russell have concealed carry licenses.

Perhaps even more interesting is the spin that CNN puts on this one. Here's the link: http://www.cnn.com/2015/07/01/us/new-mexico-motel-shooting/index.html

I would have edited for brevity, but I think it's instructive to compare the AP version that hso posted with CNN's.
CNN said:
A former CNN reporter was wounded three times Tuesday night during a deadly shootout with a man who allegedly tried to rob him and his wife in a New Mexico motel room.

Chuck de Caro and his wife, former Headline News anchor and CNN correspondent Lynne Russell, were on a road trip and spending the night at an Albuquerque motel when de Caro killed the man during what Russell called an attempted robbery.

Albuquerque police said they have yet to question de Caro, who had surgery for his wounds.

Officer Fred Duran said no charges were expected to be filed against de Caro. Russell said her husband fired in self-defense.

"I am really proud of him," Russell said. "I thank him over and over for saving my life. He really is my hero."

Russell said a gunman came into their Motel 6 room through the open door after she had just returned from getting something out of the car. The man pushed her into the room.

De Caro, who worked at CNN in the mid-1980s as special assignments correspondent, was coming out of the bathroom after taking a shower and saw Russell being held at gunpoint.

"He tried to change the guy's mind," Russell said.

The gunman wanted money and other valuables, she said.

She told the gunman she would look in her purse to see what they had. She reached down and put one of the two handguns the couple had in a side table into the purse. She gave the handbag to her husband.

Russell said the guns were legal, something police are still investigating.

The man's behavior was increasingly erratic, Russell said. He told them to get a briefcase he saw.

The couple explained there was nothing of value in the bag, but the man lunged at them and "went around the bed and then opened fire on Chuck. There was a firefight inside the room."

De Caro was shot once in the leg and twice in the abdomen.

He fired all the rounds in the first handgun then picked up the other and shot the man. The man, who police identified in a news release as the "offender in the altercation," was found in the parking lot. He died at a hospital, CNN affiliate KOAT reported.

Russell, who worked for Headline News (now HLN) from 1983 to 2001, said the couple was heading to California and, after stopping in Albuquerque to have dinner with friends, they decided to get a motel room. They chose Motel 6 because it allows dogs, she said.
I'm struck by several things:
1. The implication that the guns might be illegal.
2. The lack of any mention of de Caro's military background.
3. The omission of any mention of the couple's CC licenses.

I caught the story on some TV news. Really, really slick how they set up the bad guy. Visiting my sister so no clue what news network. However, the news story I saw and the accounts of Chuck de Caro and his wife, former Headline News anchor and CNN correspondent Lynne Russell, differ slightly from the text above. I guess we wait and see how it all plays out.

It appears the couple was headed for California. Depending on exactly to where in California, their right to such an option for self defense may end upon arrival.

I am reminded of my favorite gun story: a friend was driving a car load of his friends through a rough part of town. They were going to a club or a show or something... any way. they can't park close and have to find a parking place blocks away.

The friends were liberals who are anti-gun. They always gave him a bunch of lip about "why do you need that?" and its just dangerous and wrong, blah, blah, blah.

Of course, when they get out of the car and started walking, they all get scared. They asked my friend, "so, are you carrying?... Do you have it?" When he answered in the affirmative, they were all quite relieved.

Let's see if the MSM can show the same courtesy (or at least benevolent hypocrisy) for this story and these fine folks with ties to the MSM.

I read the story on a few different websites and there were several subtle differences. But anyway, one of them reported that Russell herself was formerly I think a sheriff somewhere.

The parts of the story that stuck out to me were;

  1. Stay calm
  2. Get to your weapon
  3. Keep fighting
Even though de Caro was hit three times he kept fighting. That was probably the single most important thing he did to win this fight.

media reports ...

The syndicated media series Inside Edition says neither Russell or her US military veteran husband will face any criminal charges.
The felon was dead on scene(DOS).

It seems like a common tactic for a thug to target a couple or tourist family then try a push in robbery or like this crime, a armed robbery.

Doing hotel security work, I've seen many tourists or travelers who were stressed out, tired, careless, or too cheap to care about the hotel security.
I'd suggest anyone who travels, spend a extra $10/20.00 per night & get a better brand or room. :uhoh:
Check the lot for any strange people or occupied vehicles.
Avoid rooms by common areas if you can; ice machines, pools, vending machines, stairs, etc. Loud fights, drunks, broken glass, etc are often around these places.
Don't leave high value items in your vehicle(s) overnight & don't get intoxicated or careless. Some clever crooks roam thru halls or watch for drunks to rob then dash off, .

Saw this story tonight on of all places: ABC World news tonight! my wife made a comment on the teaser before the show went to commercial something like "do you think it will be about them defending themselves with a gun?" I said no, never on a left wing network like ABC. then lo and behold when the story ran we find out the former CNN anchor and her reporter husband both had concealed carry permits and one of them killed the cretin criminal that was bent on doing them harm. Can't believe ABC world news tonight would ever run a positive story like this.

Most newer motels seem to limit access to one central room where the desk staff sees everybody who enters and exits. That type of accommodation may cost a little more, but seeminigly cuts the risk factor of unwanted encounters. Myself, I won't stay anywhere else. Fact of the matter is, I just can't ninja like I used to.

I remember Lynne Russel when she was on CNN and she never came across like a liberal, she always was one of the sane reporters on that network.

That's the same lesson I took away from the Detroit grandmother story, reinforced now by reading this one.

How much do you want to bet that the anchor wasn't carrying Federal 9BPLE in his gun? Jeez. Shot the guy with all the rounds in his gun then picked up the bad guys gun and shot him with it, too. Bad guy just wouldn't drop. Sounds like 380ACP at work here.

Besides the fact that a CNN employee with a CCW permit and a gun was involved, what really caught my attention when I first read this story yesterday was where this cross country trip started. Don't know if stories have been edited since yesterday because now I can't seem to find it anywhere, but I'm sure I read they were travelling from Washington DC to somewhere out west. I was wondering how exactly they were legally carrying if they started out in DC?

I have probably stayed at that motel. I drive through Albuquerque a few times a year and while I prefer not to overnight in/near the city, it sometimes happens.

The last time I made that trip, I was with two seniors, one of whom is wheelchair bound. The other didn't understand why I had a pistol on my hip and a sub2k in my bag. Fortunately I have never had problems through there but there are definitely people who watch for tired and distracted travelers with no good intent.

And yes, when the destination is California, non-residents have no legal choice but to unload and pack up the handgun(s) on the Arizona side of the state line. It also limits firearm choices (no sub2k, no normal capacity magazines, etc.). I don't know if these ex reporters are California residents but I'm not, so I know the ritual well.

General Geoff writes, in reference to de Caro using two weapons:

So much for no law abiding citizen needing high capacity magazines, right?

Definitely a valid point but, for all we know, both guns could have been .38 Special, five-shooting, J-frames..

I'm embarking on a road trip tomorrow. I'll have at least four with me, a EDC, a DCC (deep-conceal), a .22LR pistol (in case some plinking opportunity pops up), and I haven't decided on the fourth. I'm tempted to grab a long gun as well. I'm only covering parts of three states, including my own, and all are 2A-friendly to a pretty good degree.

Details...

Lynne Russell was one of the original news anchors on CNN Headline News. She was also a former sworn LE deputy in the metro Atlanta GA area, a licensed PI & "black-belt" in martial arts. Not the victim I'd choose, :uhoh: .
Her husband was at a disadvantage in the melee. He was hit 3 times(leg, lower torso). The media says he should make a full recovery.

It's unknown what type handgun the husband/SF veteran used. Or how many times he shot the felon.

Sounds like that former CNN anchor knew his business and handled himself very well, in that fight.

It's sad he was pushed in to a position where he was forced to use lethal force.

I hope that his wounds heal rapidly and that there's no significant emotional distress on the part of him, or his wife. Being in a violent conflict is a very traumatic experience and some scars aren't visible. Might be tough to feel 'normal' again in daily activities after a sudden, violent, and ultimately lethal intrusion like that; for both him and his lady.

Sounds like 380ACP at work here.
How did you arrive at that conclusion??

Could have been two .40 S&Ws, or two .38 Specials, or two .45's for all we know.

People don't always fall down and stop fighting when shot with any caliber handgun.

(Witness the escaped murder shot twice with a NY Trooper the other day.)

He stopped, but he didn't fall over dead as if struck by Thor's hammer.

He & She ...

The husband was also a CNN reporter & consultant on military affairs.
He's being reported as working for a defense contractor/DoD support firm in NOVA.

As posted, both husband & wife were well trained with the proper mindset.

I was only a couple weeks or so ago that an elderly woman was kidnapped while going to her car at a hotel here in Tucson. Almost identical circumstances, except there were two assailants ,and they abducted her. My Son and I were on our way back from bowling and saw all the cops at the hotel 20-30 minutes after she had been nabbed according to reports.

Let me tell ya from experience, It's a dangerous world out there. Liberal or other wise, I'm just glad these folks were prepared to fight for their lives.

I saw this story with a reenactment on the Today Show. Both handguns were apparently laying on the nightstand when he went in the shower and she went outside.

They were at their hotel and relaxed and let their guard down. Should be a wake up call for those of us that try to stay armed most of the day. She should not have gone to the car at midnight without her gun. I think they were both very lucky that the BG didn't spot their guns before they were able to get to them. I do ALWAYS pocket carry at home and this reinforces that decision for me.
