One of the cautions to reduce the chances of a slam fire in a M1 is to always load from the magazine. The bolt slamming home on a loaded chamber has more energy than when picking up and chambering a round from the magazine. It makes sense to me.
Mossbergs ATR have had some issues with the bolt blowing backward with factory ammo resulting in facial injury.

The boys on the savage blogs love their rifles. I'm happy they have strong competition.
I bought one from Tantal too. Love it! Holds zero remarkably well.
My only complaint is the cyrillic letters for left, right, up and down are hard to remember. Can't forget to turn it off!
My advice to anyone owning the rifle or knowing anyone who does would be to evaluate the bolt failure claims before firing again. Pass the word to any friends. This appears to be a serious design problem.
Call Mossberg;they have to be on it by now.
They say that the professional hunters want the controlled feed when out for dangerous game. They don't want a round to stove pipe when facing a charge. Take a look at the claw picking up a round when you slowly chamber. Very impressive engineering.

If you love your brother, have him lock the gun up and call Mossberg. You can do a search too. Key word "injury" and Mossberg ATR...
The sharks are in the water: This from a Tampa attorney
My client was injured when his 9 day old Mossberg 100 ATR exploded essentially blowing his face off. Another individual in Louisiana was injured when he shot his 14 day old Mossberg 100 ATR, again essentially blowing his face off...
I have a CZ Varmint laminate in .308 topped with a Super Sniper 10x scope. The gray stock is beautiful. The set trigger is a nice.
It will shoot within an inch.
My .243 Savage groups a little better.
