A 30 30 is a brush gun. it should never be used anything other than paper over100 yards.

Please define "brush gun"

Just because you're not a good enough shot to use a 30-30 beyond 100yds doesn't mean it's not more than up to the task. Back at it's introduction 30wcf was considered a flat shooting long range cartridge.

Click on the top link in my signature to see what can be done with cartridges of this class with proper loadings.

There's a world of difference between 400 yards and 'over 100' yards.

Yes there is, but that still doesn't mean a 30-30 in a suitable platform with specifically loaded ammunition cannot be accurate at that range. 30-30 is only a less than 150yd cartridge if you blindly believe the garbage written in gun magazines

For hunting you would want to limit yourself to 300yds even at that extreme range a 30-30 packs more energy than a 357magnum handgun at the muzzle, for the man who understands trajectory and uses a rangefinder bullet drop doesn't even matter . Again see the top sig line, the deer in that pic didn't care that the cartridge used was slightly less powerful than 30-30

But for targets 400 would be very doable again in a rifle built for accuracy and ammunition specifically loaded for target work.

Mossbergs ATR have had some issues with the bolt blowing backward with factory ammo resulting in facial injury.

Do a search on this site

The boys on the savage blogs love their rifles. I'm happy they have strong competition.

Stevens is about one of the best rifles out of the box for $300 new.

I've got one in the 300 Win Mag (the caliber not many would like to shoot out of such a light rifle) and it's a shooter. El-Cheapo stock, but some paint spices things up. Using factory ammo, I can hit a quarter sized target at 100 yards.

Krochus, I know. I was responding to the fellow you were responding too. Originally he said not to take game past 100yds, now he's saying that 400yds is unethical. Just pointing out they aren't the same number. :p
