Marlin XL7 or Mossy ATR100

Which would be best for deer hunting up to maybe 200 yards? What rifle and caliber? Thanks for the help!

I don't have any experience with the ATR100. I can say that the XL7 I recently bought has been a pleasant surprise. The trigger is nice, and I've got a load for it that shows promise; currently 0.56" at 100 yards.
 
The ATR-100 270 is a popular for deer hunting and it should be, its $249 at walmart which usually stocks it in 270, and excellent flat shooting deer round that is not much to shoot. I have read that they are ~1.25MOA out of the box with proper scope which is enough for deer hunting.
 
I purchased the XL-7 from Bass Pro Shops two months ago in .30-06. Price was nice at $280-$290, had a gift card and reward points that knocked it down a bit.
Not shot yet, but trigger seems smooth and pull not creepy or heavy.
I believe it is also offered in .25-06 and .270.
All three are fine for 200 yard taking of deer-sized game.
I hope to see short actions in 7mm-08 and .308 next season.

(If you plan to hunt in the northern states, consider buying the .30-06, apparently the deer hides are so thick and tough anything bullet under .30 cal can't penetrate them ;). At least thats was what I was told the first year hunting in Wisconsin. Funny how 130 grain .270 bullets dispel that myth.)
 
I normally would say the atr, it is a great rifle. That being said, the marlin has too many great features to pass up; solid piece bolt construction, Timney trigger, bbl either made by t/c or green mountain, pillar bedded and very stiff stock. Z figure slide out, on the bolt. i would have to do the marlin just to give it a go...
 
Thanks for the input everyone. I think I may make my choice in the morning and go grab one.
 
I found this thread too late but it seems that the Mossberg may have some design problems. At least 3 have recently had the bolt break while firing and come back into the shooters face. Lawsuits have been filed and Mossberg is claiming defective ammo. Google "Mossberg ATR bolt defect" for more info.
 
jmr do you have a link to that? I tried looking for it but had no luck. Just one about a guys hand getting hurt.
 
To bad I did not see this earlier. I was following a thread about bolt failure issues with an ATR firing factory ammo taking out a bunch of teeth last Summer over at Benchrest Central. I don't think I could bring myself to shoot an ATR after reading that thread.
 
I have an ATR in 30.06 and there are no issues at all. I don't think that a bolt all the way forward and locked in the down position would somehow fly back and crack him in the grill. IMHO 1. he's a left hand shooter and did not shoulder the weapon properly and the knob smacked him. 2. The bolt wasn't locked all the way in position and somehow the rifle fired. Both of which are shooter error no the the guns fault. Again this is just my opinion. Besides the internet tends to twist stories all over the place, so who knows what really happened.
 
I saw some pictures of the Mossberg's blown bolt. I wouldn't buy one and if I had one it would be locked up until the recall.

Get a Stevens.
 
Well, let's see... how many ATR1000's are out there in the real world?? I'd guess a bunch... How many incidents are we hearing about??? Less than 10??? I don't know if there's a firearm out there that there hasn't been some kind of incident occur... If it's mechanical, sooner or later, something will go wrong. It could be user error, or it could be mechanical failure, or even mechanical failure due to user error.

I'm sure Remington, Winchester, Savage, Sako, Weatherby, Marlin, CZ, Browning, etc... pick a manufacturer, have had some kind of malfunction somewhere in their respective business lives... it's a matter of odds... sooner or later, the odds do catch up...

My client was injured when his 9 day old Mossberg 100 ATR exploded essentially blowing his face off. Another individual in Louisiana was injured when he shot his 14 day old Mossberg 100 ATR, again essentially blowing his face off.

Brooks, how about you post those pictures of the blown bolt. I'm not calling you a liar, but anyone can post erroneous information to back a cause.

I ask, because I own/owned a Mossberg 100 ATR purchased in October 2008. I have since sold it to my brother, he is using reloaded ammo that I have made for it and used while I was shooting it. While shooting, I never saw any pressure signs, but is something that I want to know more about for the safety and well being of my family.
 
Mossbergs are a fairly new gun and relatively few have been made. I'd say having 3 self destruct when being shot is a lot. Look at how many other bolt rifles are out there and I have never heard of this type of problem. Even with barrel obstructions and over charged reloads the barrel or chamber area is what usually gives. The actions usually hold together and do not allow the bolt to come back into your face.
 
Id like to see the blown bolt and ask if any thing was found in the action. Mossberg should be happy to pay the cost of care for such an injury. As a gun maker I would be.
As a gun smith it should be possible to get new pins and test them for hardness and re temper if needed. The bolt could be welded into one piece. only the lugs need to be tempered so welding behind them wound change that.
 
I'm guessing the Marlin or maybe a Stevens 200 is looking pretty good about now.
Really, more info is needed before passing any judgment on the ATR. Internet rumors are just that.

i love my xl7 in .30-06 a bit more money but its worth it the marlin just looked alot better and felt alot better to me

the trigger is great and can be taken way dont
