I have one of the CZ527 Varmint rifles. With a Bushnell Elite 2400 6-24x40AO w/ Warne rings. This one has the 1:9 twist barrel also which allows me to shoot heavier bullets 69gn BTHP's. She was a bit more expensive than a Savage (my second choice) but, the quality/workmanship is so much better...
I also have one of the CZ527 Varmints in .223 - I used a set of Warne Maxima permanent rings (they make 'em for the CZ) and mounted a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40ao scope. I like the Warne rings as they are steel and I also like the vertical split rings.
I think a Model 17 would fit the bill nicely.
My 17-4 6" came with the target grips, hammer, & trigger - if the target grips are too large/small for your hands, there are many options either by S&W or after market.
S&W Model 17-4 6"
Yep - I had mine installed when I purchased the Fajen target stock. Works very well, worth it, & every bit of stability helps.
All VQ stuff is excellent quality - when I started adding VQ aftermarket parts to my stock 10/22, I wound up replacing every thing including the receiver.
My original...
Steel & wood - I'll take it old school. And a bit of old leather too.

I think you made a good choice on a .22 rifle.
I've got two of them (one is Wifey's), both are good shooters & great little field .22's. Mine are the Charles Daly import Superior II but, the CZ99, Remington Model 5, & Superior II are all the same Zastava import.
Check out RimFire Central...
My grandkids have all gotten Savage MkII's for their 12th B-days.
Nothing fancy, all with iron sights so they concentrate on basic rifle skills. I'll scope the rifles, after the first 6 months or so, with Simmons .22Mag. 3-9x32 rimfire scopes.
