223 bolt actions..?

I don't have one but theRe is one in particular thats been peaking my interest.

The Ruger American Ranch model says it can can do 223 and 5.56 which is pretty rare in a bolt action.

Agreen with above that they should tweak it to accept mini 14 mags.

I really like my Howa Mini in .223. I haven't tried to get it dialed in to the best load yet but just shooting PMC cheapo ammo it is very good. HATES the cheap steel cased Tulamo though. Jams in the chamber often.

I have one of the CZ527 Varmint rifles. With a Bushnell Elite 2400 6-24x40AO w/ Warne rings. This one has the 1:9 twist barrel also which allows me to shoot heavier bullets 69gn BTHP's. She was a bit more expensive than a Savage (my second choice) but, the quality/workmanship is so much better than the Savage & I was lucky enough to get a really nice tiger striped maple stock. I have other CZ's and Savage rifles, I'd go with a CZ every time.

ive been told that's the lacquer type coating on the cases so they don't rust heating up and gluing to your chamber.

savage axis 223rem heavy barrel with accu trigger and factory stock shot off Caldwell front a rear sand bags with 55gr v max and several times with FMJ-BT I sent 3 FMJ in the same hole at 100yards and v max one ragged hole at 100yards and an almost 300yards woodchuck kill. I also have the standard barrel with non accu trigger that shoots the same. savage is running rebates on them also.

Stopped at the pawn shop and all they had was an Axis with a Bushnell scope and wanted 299.99. Heck, I even had to point it out to the guy at the counter after he told me they didn't have any. Not impressed... heck, the counter guy at Dicks was a lot more helpful.
I like the looks of that CZ, not sure if I like it twice as much as the Savage though. Those Savages sure aren't much on looks but they seem to shoot accurately by all your reports. Maybe they are the better deal what with the rebates and all..?

Frankly, the CZ is the better made of the 2, and rightfully costs more than the Savage 12FV. The thing with the savage is, its dead muts accurate, has a jeweled bolt and the accutrigger. I bought 2, with rebate and free shipping, 249 out the door. If you buy discounted gift cards and sign up for the Cabelas card it is even less.

I cant hardly buy a barrel that cheap...put the barreled action in a decent chassis and its a nice lo-buck shooter.

Oh don't get me wrong, I do like the CZ both for fit, finish, mini Mauser action and the added fact that they are accurate. But, if I were to have a nick name it would be "Cheap Bast##d"... Plus I'd agonize every time that I dragged the nice rifle through the spiny hedgerows and over the rusty barbed wire fences of Kansass.
A wise man is credited with saying, "Only accurate rifles are interesting". He didn't say pretty... ;)

T/C still has $75 rebate until 12.31.2017 if you wanna Ball-on-a-Budget...

But I also like the Mossbergs and Savages, especially sale prices as of late.

If you want a little nicer, Tikka is never ever ever a bad answer.

we have a shop around here selling axis heavy barrel with cheapo scope $under $300 with rebate. If you don't like the stock which I hate mine a boyds is nice. BTW guys stop saying the 12fv is on sale and under $300 because its not helping me keeping myself from buying one in say 22-250, 308, 243. hell maybe all 3 together.

+1 for the Tikka. I got a stainless T3 and found that if i just want to go plink and what not, its my go to rifle. Varmints and Tannerite too. Its also a full size gun, similar to what you may hunt with, so its good for practicing offhand and whatnot

Now days you can pretty much pick one and itll be a shooter. And pretty cheap to boot.

Axis, American, Compass, etc shoot as good as any factory rifle for next to nothing. Cheaply made, not usually beautiful, but work horses nonetheless.

Their ability plus a little more of an heirloom quality and good looks and something that is built to last will cost more. Usually wont print much tighter groups but will look better doing it. Tikka, Vandgaurd SII, Howa, CZ, Rem, etc.

I have some of each in various calibers. Cheaper ones to drag through the woods and a little nicer ones to punch paper and leave my sons.

Depends on what your after. I use my CZ 527 Varmit and Ruger Ranch alot. Both 5.56/223. Love both, the CZ tends to outshoot the Ruger just a fuzz but the Ranch is handy and i dont worry about scratching it. It also shoots PDG. The CZ 527 carbine would shoot good and be handy. Just wouldnt want to skin it up.

All in what your needs are. Good luck

I went with a Kimber Longmaster Classic years ago. It's a bit finicky about ammo but the stuff it likes it shoots into one hole. I handload and the bullets it likes best are Nosler 40 grain Ballistic Tip, Sierra 63 grain Semi Point and 68/69 grain hollow points from multiple manufacturers.

I have several .223s but the most satisfying to shoot is the 527 Varmint. I haven't reloaded for it but have found some pretty affordable factory ammo that consistently shoots under half-MOA, so I'm not sure if I'll start reloading, or not.

Well I had to go over to Independence this morning so on the way back stopped in KCK at Cabela's. Found a Savage Model 11 Predator with the heavy barrel, a Nikon scope and camo stock. It was marked down as a Clearance and also qualified for the rebate so, after a double check with the head of the budget, I brought it home. It's a 1-9 twist barrel so I'll be checking out the 55 grain bullets first and see how that goes.
And BTW, the folks at the firearms department at the KCK Cabela's are helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. I actually enjoyed spend money there today.

I have 2 Americans- a predator in 308, and a ranch in 300 B-O. They are good guns, but my Mossberg 223 thunder ranch shoots better groups than either of the Rugers. Also the price of Ruger American mags ($30+) VS the price of AR mags for the Mossberg (mine functions 100% with 10 and 20 round P-mags- about $12) is another plus.

I cant wait for this sale to end. I am trying to talk myself into another.....they do this from time to time, it will happen again. I need to direct play money to scopes and tactical chassis/stocks....not to mention dies and more reloading supplies....and handguns....and rifle cases....and triggers.....holsters.....fancy bolts....scope rings.....oh, and silencers! And....

Personally If i buy another .223/556 bolt gun it will be either a Howa mini, or a Cz 527.
I have a rem700 that was originally a .223, which i rebarrled to 6x47Rem. The cartridges look lost in even the short action receivers. My buddies Axis seems huge in .223.

That said if you dont mind then there are a bunch of good rifles in .223. Personally i really like the ruger americans.

I agree completely and a CZ 527 is just about the only gun I'd consider for a .223 bolt action rifle, followed only by the Howa.

Your 9 twist should shoot the 69 gr. Sierra just fine for longer ranges, lighter slugs won't be a problem either. Won't shoot anything heavier well.

I wouldn't carve the "won't" in stone. My 20" 1-9" REM shoots the 75 grain Hornady's fine out to 547. Depending on MV it might be possible, "won't" know for sure till he tries.
