200 gr cast bullet in 45-70?

I have a pile of cast lubed SWC 200 gr bullets intended for .45 acp. However they seem a bit oversized, even with a well-flared case, I am getting a ring of cut lead and lube when I seat them, that I then have to pick out with my thumbnail. Rather than .452, they are running .453-.454". I am...

    Wet vs. dry case cleaning.

re drying after ultrasonic cleaning, I take them out hot, run very hot tap water over colander full of clean brass, then put a handful into a towel, into a ball, swing that around every which way, dump into shallow tray over old toweling and put under a photo reflector lamp for about half an...

    Seating 9mm

seat too deeply...??? My last batch of 9mm reloads, two casings evidently had not been fully resized, and the 147 gr plated (Berry's) bullets slid right down to the powder. Discard them? I read that you can have too much pressure if a 9mm is seated too deeply?

comparison test of 9mm for steel challenge, falling plates

I had the chance to hold and dryfire both today, and noticed two things about the grips. The length on the S&W had my 3 'holding' fingers squeezed together noticeably (I have large, although not beefy, hands.). The XD(m) had more length, more comfortable in that respect. However, the pattern...

comparison test of 9mm for steel challenge, falling plates

I have been contemplating trying a 'modern' pistol for my (very relaxed) falling plates and steel challenge forays, and was wondering about A/B'ing a S&W Pro Series (C.O.R.E.) 9mm against a Springfield XD(m) Competition model with the 5.25" barrel. Has anyone compared the two, and have an...

    shot size for hunting

I have a young friend who is interested in varmint hunting, out to 50 yards, and up to coyotes. He has a Remington pump, 12 ga., full choke, and was talking about #4 shot for coyote. I was thinking that sounded a little light but I am a target shooter, not a hunter. What is a responsible...

Next step after trimming .223 brass

My limited experience, but worked well so far; Hornady OneShot spray, over cases standing upright in tray, at an angle so some goes inside neck. Spray from a couple of directions for good coverage. Later cleans off easily with handtowel.

Next step after trimming .223 brass

newbie question Let me ask a variation; started reloading with a rockchucker single stage and Lyman dies, .223 first, once fired cases, so I figured they would not have stretched much, I did not measure or trim or chamfer. Loaded up nicely, fired nicely. So I then take 100 tumbled, lubed...

    need brass drift punch

I need a brass drift pin or punch, to make adjustments to my new (to me) Anschutz #1418 .22 rifle's rear sight. Without waiting for one to arrive from Brownell's, any suggestions for a substitute which will not damage the rear sight finish? I tried a short length of wooden dowel (actually a...

Should I expect a Les Baer Custom Carry to run out of the box?

article in American rifleman There is an interesting article in the March 1911 issue of The American Rifleman, entitled "The Evolution of the Custom Combat .45", which describes the history and evolution through several developing trends of the Kimber, Springfield, Wilson, Nighthawk, Brown and...

Should I expect a Les Baer Custom Carry to run out of the box?

Me, I like to shoot, I was only to happy to go to the range and shoot my P-II, I was practising the whole time, I got better as it went along, what's not to like? I do the same with any gun, I keep a logbook, if I am not shooting it, for whatever reason, I am selling it. Probly time to lock...

Should I expect a Les Baer Custom Carry to run out of the box?

another Baer fan I felt ill at ease with Ed Browns, like they were just a tad too far on the status symbol side, and I wasn't that good...my Baer PII, it is like an old pair of boots that are broken in and fit me to a tee, just a real comfortable feeling. I can't imagine ever letting go of it...

3913 Shooters-Is this me, or the gun?

Gotta be you... The 3913 is amazingly accurate for a short barrel pistol.

Should I expect a Les Baer Custom Carry to run out of the box?

It will run out of the box, but with Baers, they say (and I did) just lube it up and shoot 500 rounds, and then clean it, just to settle in and loosen up a tad.
