retention classes are fun, when i did mine there was of course a crawl, walk, run phase but it all culminated in me standing on the mats talking to the instructor and geting jumped by 3 dudes all trying to disarm me....fun times!!!!!!!!!
i dont carry one on me all the time, but i do keep a surefire 6p def in the car and one by the front door, if i leave the car later in the day or the house after dark it stays on my person. normaly if im within 2 hours of dark ill have a light on me
i think it has alot more to do with the versatility of a shotgun, they have les lethal rounds for a shotgun, such as oc rounds, rubber projectiles, bean bags...ect
as for escape from the yard or whatever long range escape you are picturing that is why they cary m4's and m14's in the towers....
