45 ACP 1911 problems

trying to load for my springfield 1911 for the first time and having issues, bullets are seated below the max OAL but when trying to eject unfired cases the tip of the bullet does not clear the ejection port.... does not do this with factory rounds. i dont have a factory round to compare it to so i figured i would ask for some insight???

bullets are 185 berry's RNHB, winchester cases within specs.

What's the OAL? That would help.

Probably your OAL is too long.

i played with OAL between 1.275 and 1.250

185 gr berry's RNHB should be comparable in size as 230 gr RN (just the base has been hollowed out to lighten the bullet).

So your 1.25"-1.275" OAL range should clear the ejection port.

Are you sure they are measured properly?

Take an round and shorten your OAL in small increments and try it in your pistol after each adjustment. When it ejects to your satisfaction then lock down the seating stem and use that OAL. Measure it and write down the OAL to use or just keep a round to use when setting the seating die after loading other bullets. Don't get hung up on the measurement, load so it works both in ejection and feeding.

Make sure you are racking the slide briskly when ejecting loaded rounds. You can get this type of failure if taking it too easy when extracting.

Some 1911's with tight ejection ports have trouble with a 1.265 to 1.270 O.A.L. round ejecting unfired. It only needs to eject fired rounds, so not really a big deal..

i played with it some more and i think it may be a gun problem not a reloading problem, at what angle do your rounds eject at? mine are trying to come straight out the side, it may just be the speed at which i am racking the slide, what has me confused is that if there is no rounds in the mag all lengths will eject so maby it has something to do with the way the bullet in the mag is pushing up into it?

Yes its possible if the loaded rounds in the magazine are riding to high, or nose up. Try more than 1 magazine, see if all do it.

a few of my guns have issues when I attempt to manually eject unfired rounds unless I do so with vigor... I would say that the first thing you should do is rack the slide hard to see if that is your problem.. the guns that I have had the most trouble with in ejecting nonfired rounds are my 1911's, lever actions, and my norinco 97... speed up the action, and they ALL work like a champ.

Have you tried shooting the ammo? The empty case has plenty of room to get out

The extended ejectors popular in current production guns can make it difficult to eject loaded rounds. Does your gun have one? Compare vs older Colt or military.

So can a buffer. Does your gun have one of those?

I shoot IDPA and the only time I eject a loaded round is at the conclusion of a course of fire. If it doesn't come out the ejection port, it falls down the magazine well and the gun is cleared.

I have the Springfield "Loaded" 1911. I too had some trouble loading for it when I started. My gun clearly prefers OALs on the low side. It's also very important to remove any bell during the crimping step. And, make sure you have a good magazine (which applies to any gun). Eventually you'll find the right formula.

I've got a Springfield Loaded 1911A1 as well. I seat my bullets to 1.200" OAL and apply a taper crimp with the Lee Factory Crimp die. Never had a FTF to FTE.
