Looking to purchase a stainless 1911, preferably with frontstrap checkering. All of these are available at my LGS.

My top 5 choices (with prices) are:

Colt Commander, $1009 (no frontstrap checkering)
USED DW Valor, $1450
SA TRP, $1470
DW Valor, $1555
DW Valor V-Bob, $1615

Thoughts? Especially interested in hearing from TRP owners, which is where I am leaning right now... (I would replace the FLGR with a GI rod & plug)

I just got a DW Heritage and it is outstanding. Don't think I really need it but sometime down the road I might add front strap checkering or maybe just some stick on grip. So far so good. Paid $1090 shipped from Grabagun.
9 fingers

He thinks a lot of his 1911's Can get DW a lot cheaper else where . I got my 1st DW CBOB for $850 of course that before that got all full of them selves . Thinking their something special.
Look at the DW boards The stainless guns seem to be having a galling problem . Other finish are doing fine .

Ooops. I voted before seeing the prices. That's too high on the Valor. I paid that much for a new one about eighteen months ago. However, the Valors are excellent.

TRP owner checking in. The TRP is my go-to 1911 (and I own a couple that cost much more than my TRPs). Just an all-around great 1911. Not mentioned in your choices, and a comparable worthy alternative (and quite a bit less expensive) in the category of SS production 1911s is the Kimber Stainless TLE II (another favorite -- I actually like the Meprolight night-sights a little more than SA's Novaks).

And yeah, I switched out the FLGRs for short GI rods and plugs.

For some reason, I'm pretty sure this thread will bring out all the DW fanboys ...

This assuming you're looking for a range gun. For carry, for sure, you can't go wrong with a Colt Commander ...

Old Dog and everyone,

Sorry, I should have clarified originally: this is for OWB or IWB carry, late fall through early spring.

Thanks to all who have replied and/or voted so far!

Buy what you like, your list is all good. If you're after best value, you can buy good guns that are less expensive for sure but if you want what's on your list, go for it!
I bought a DW Heritage because I thought it was best in class/value with the features I wanted-- my opinion, my purchase, my gun, I'm not sorry! You'll be pleased with any of those choices.

I would probably go with the Colt Commander as it's a decent gun at that price. I have bought 4 Colts over the last few years and all of them have been great buys for the money.

I was surprised to see the Colt on this list (being a higher-end mass-produced 1911 versus the other semi-customs).

If this would be a carry gun, it would be my first choice as well, because it will work as well as all the others, but I would be less likely to worry about scratching or scuffing it up, compared to the higher-dollar options.

If you just wanted a nice 1911 to shoot, look at, or just to have, it's tough to beat the DW offerings.

Thanks, Bannockburn. I love Colts - I have three of them -- a 1911 WWI repro, a SAA in 45 Colt and a blackpowder Navy.

A question for you: I didn't list it, but what do you make, if anything, of the Colt Concealed Carry Government? I've seen a used one for about $875.

I have the black Valor and really like it. I was trying to decide between a Les Baer and the Valor and Dave Severns of Severns Custom steered me towards the Valor.

It's pretty much everything I want in a 1911 and nothing I don't (front cocking serrations). I chose the black finish because it appeals to me aesthetically and it is a very tough finish.

I do like the looks of the Colt Concealed Carry Government (though I haven't seen one in person), but it isn't stainless and isn't on your list.

Quality is spelled: C-O-L-T

Can't go wrong w/ the SS Colt XSE Commander. However not in the list and for your specified needs, I'd look at the Kimber Pro Carry II in stainless. It has an alloy frame, so will be a bit lighter on your hip than the all-steel Colt, IIRC. Good luck!

My 2 stainless 1911s are a TRP and a Kimber. Both are excellent and the only galling I've ever heard about was back in the AMT Hardballer era, or guys who don't put enough lube on their rails.

It's odd....

The Colt has overtaken the DW's in the poll, yet all of the comments extol the DW. Where are the Colt fans?

As a Colt fan all we have to do is say "Colt" and that says it all! :)

The new Colt's are excellent in quality and build. I have shot them since about 1977 when I bought my first Combat Commander.

Except for the old school bluing the new guns are far more consistent in build quality and dare I say value.

Buy the Colt and stick some grip tape if you need it or have it machine checkered at any number of places and still be less than some DW's.

And a question cause I have seen it listed that some DW's have a cast frame. Is that true of any of the ones listed?

Not wanted to start the forged vs cast war... asking

I own both Colt and Dan Wesson. The finish and fit of the DW absolutely outshines the Colt. However, there is also about an $800 difference between the two. The only thing I don't like about the colt is the mushy thumb safety that doesn't positively snap upwards. I'm having that taken care of now. I find it to be accurate and utterly reliable. If I could only keep one though, it would be the VBOB. I'd get another Colt in a heartbeat though with no regrets.

Don't overthink the "galling" thing. Lube the gun as you would any tight fitting 1911. I call BS on actual galling occurring.

There's at least one or two threads a month in the DW section at 1911 forum of a DW seizing up because of the clearances on the SS 1911s without the Melonite. Probably a good reason why Baer doesn't offer the 1.5" at 50 guarantee with their SS models.

almostfree

A bit of thread drift but I had to look up the Colt Concealed Carry Government Model you mentioned as I never heard of it before. What I found interesting about it is why Colt wouldn't have marketed their Lightweight Government Model as being a more suitable choice for concealed carry in a Government Model because of it's lighter weight. That was one of the reasons I went with the aluminum alloy framed Government because I wanted to use it for both the range and for concealed carry; plus I liked the way it felt in terms of it's overall balance and handling.

After doing the Budsgunshop price check, Colt stands head & shoulders above all others in value. I can't believe Dan Wesson (CZ USA) charges what they do... granted the VBOB is less expensive than the Ed Brown original bobtail; I still think more than $1299 for a BRAND NEW 1911 is overpaying when the playing field levels more and more each year.

Yes, above is still true. The Colt pistols coming out of Hartford are better than ever (speaking of postwar mfg). I'd get another Colt or el-cheapo RIA as a project gun before spending $1750 on a DW. Good luck, YMMV. :D
