It's gun buy time again thanks to our company office move that's been netting beaucoup overtime. I've been looking for a Commander sized 1911 for a while and have had to content myself with the fact that I'm going to have to do a little smithing because I'm not going to find an out of box model with all the features I want, and without any of the ones I don't.

My original intention was to start with a Springfield Armory GI Champion and work my way up, but the bull barrel becomes problematic because I'd have to fit a normal Commander barrel, bushing, and so on along with all the other bits and bobs I want (all steel slide release, thumb safety, hammer, sear, disconnector, mag release, etc etc etc.). I had thought about looking for a used Combat Commander, but there's nothing local and I'm not ordering used online since being burned twice before on other used guns plus I like helping keep my local gun shops in business.

Sooooo, I started looking for other options. I definitely want a Series 70 gun as opposed to Series 80. We don't need the firing pin safety in Maine, and I don't want a gun with it. I also want a carbon steel gun and not stainless. That narrowed my choices down a bit. I'm also trying to keep the cost of a base gun under a grand because I didn't get THAT much OT. I've pretty much settled on the Para Ordnance LTC all steel model (found here http://www.paraord.com/product/product.html?id=2 ). I'm confident in my ability to fit the parts I know I'll replace on it except for one area. The full length guide rod.

Is this something I can replace with a standard Commander sized recoil spring, spring guide, and plug, or is there more fitting involved? I know that there are thousands of 1911 owners out there that love their FLGR, but I'm an old fashioned fart that likes being able to take down his gun without little metal clips or other small tools.

Thanks for any advice on the matter.

The FLGR will be the easiest part on your list to change. Brownells part # 087-000-031(guide) & #087-000-020(plug) are all you will need.

Jmorris is right, and usually no fitting or gunsmithing is necessary. However if you really want to save a few bucks you can cut the FLGR down to standard length, and just replace the recoil spring plug.

The primary purpose of a FLGR is to move $$$ from your pocket into that of whoever is making/selling this relatively worthless accessory.

Guide Rods

A word to the wise...

The Commander guide rod is designed for the Commander...which is a quarter-inch longer than the Champion. Not sure about how much distance remains between the end of the rod and the inside of the plug when the Commander slide is full rearward...but it might not be sufficient for use in the Springfield.

Check slide travel with the rod installed and the plug missing...and then with the plug installed...to see if there's any difference in the travel. If there is, the end of the rod is hitting the inside surface of the plug and stopping the slide.

Bad JuJu if it happens when you fire the gun.

You also might want to check the length of the plug itself. If the rear of the plug hits the forwardmost barrel lug before the slide stops on the frame...See above.

Tuner has a good point. I was thinking of the original Colt Commander with a 4 1/4" barrel, and unaware that anyone made a pistol with a shorter length that still had a barrel bushing. :uhoh:

But then again there is the Officers Model ACP...

Maybe I should stick to Cap & Ball revolvers...

Thanks for the advice gents. I double-checked the Para LTC and it is indeed the standard 4 1/4" Commander length.

I'll add the spring plug and spring guide to the list of parts I'm planning on replacing.
