The Republican presidential candidate told NBC News Thursday that "stripping law abiding people of their guns … I don't believe it will get the job done. I just don't."

"You can strip all the guns away but the people who are going to commit crimes or have problems are always going to have the guns and more and more people feel like I'd like to be able to protect myself," Kasich added.

Wow, a politician said it and then it was published by the media.

Are pigs now flying and I missed it?

Kasich has changed a lot since he voted yes for the AWB in 1994. I believe he has seen the light and is sincere.

People can change. I did.

the key phrase is "republican presidential candidate" leading up to the primaries.
they all say that stuff. and the media publishes it because the media thinks it makes them look extremist

then in the general election, it will be "common sense gun laws are ok, because nobody needs that shoulder thing that goes up"

I would say that supporting guns the day after a mass shooting is pretty honest. More likely to lose votes from that today than gain them. My gun rights have improved in ohio since his election.

that's a fair point. i didn't realize his statement was from today

This was the reason it resonated inside me. Right after the tragedy is not a good time to push a pro-gun agenda for any candidate let alone a current governor. IMO, it takes nads and could have cost him supporters. I applaud this man for his decision to go on the record when he did. If this was last week or last month I would not have thought it was anything more than lip service for a candidate.

It's rather interesting that Donald Trump issued a statement saying much the same thing. I don't believe the other Republican candidates have been heard from - or maybe they are simply being ignored by the media.

Kasich has always been a straight shooter and here in Ohio has never blocked any of the gun legislation like changes (good changes) to CCW laws. The guy is also a smart business man which does not hurt when running the state economy and balancing the books. Some seem to view Kasich as leaning a little left for a Republican but when it comes to guns the guy has been right on target. He simply does not see more gun laws and legislation as a solution to the gun violence problem. He also realizes you can't legislate morality.

Just My Take....

I live in Ohio and have appreciated what Kasich has done with our CCW law. It was very flawed in the beginning, but better than no CCW law. Under Kasich, a LOT of the flaws, ambiguous language and such have improved. Is he the best candidate for president? We'll see. But he's speaking his mind on this issue in a time when it would be easy to follow the crowd. More than I can say about a lot of other political and public figures.

A lot of those fixes to Ohio gun laws came through the lobbying of the Buckeye Firearms Association. They have done a lot to improve our laws, but I agree the politicians that codified their suggestions into law deserve credit for doing so. Kasich went from supporting the AWB to being pretty pro-2A. I think he is legitimate, but he won't make it to the presidency. Good guy in general though.

YEP.....Our current Governor will say just about anything to either get elected Pres or re-elected as Gov.

They have indeed! It isn't as though Mr. Kasich has gone out of his way there.
Remember that it was the former Democrat Governor Strickland who signed in the original concealed carry and 'state trumps local laws' legislation before Gov Kasich came in (and after the prior Republican Gov Taft wouldn't sign it).

Ain't politics fun?
.

I like Kasich! Who's to say a pro second amendment Gov from the Midwest will not make it. Couldn't hurt to be from a swing state like Ohio.

Hey look what Brownback did in Kansas signed the bill for Constitutional carry!
