Squirrel hunters?

Awesome. Me and my bud are going squirrel hunting, but first hlg hunting at the end of the month.

Can't wait to get some tasty natural meat!!!! :D

Sounds good. They are so TOUGH! That's why dumplin's and squirrel go so well together.
Slow cooking is the secret. That's why I like rabbit better. Sooooo tender anyway you cook it (fried, dumplin's, baked, etc.).

Granddaddy, who introduced me to hunting, liked to use a Browning .22 Short for squirrel, and 12 ga. for Mr. Rabbit.

I first used .410 (which he gave me), then later on , 12 gauge with # 6 shot for both. I never wanted to give them a chance!:D

I haven't hunted or eaten them in so long I can't remember.

But slow cooking makes good sense for tender.

Mom used to fry the young ones, and simmer the older ones in a stew.

I shoot a couple every day from my attic window, then I set them out at night to feed the foxes. This keeps the foxes in the area and they in turn keep the field mice population down. I haven’t seen a field mouse in years.

I take a few squirrels every now and then for personal consumption as well.

The telephone and cable repair guys tell me the squirrels are extremely destructive to their wires and they wish it was always open season with no limits.

BTW: This is how I (it’s not me in the video) clean a squirrel:

I gut and quarter them, pass them quickly over a stove burner to singe of any remaining stray hairs. Soak overnight in salted water, to draw out any blood. Find a good grilled chicken recipe, for me that means some marinade time. Cook on the grill according to recipe, add your favorite sauce and continue to cook until fragrant and tasty looking. Another good way to use them is in pot pie, clean and quarter, soak overnight, simmer until meat falls away from the bone, pick meat off bone, find good potpie recipe and sub squirrel meat for chicken. I've made them this way and fed to friends, who had no idea it was squirrel and not chicken. Squirrel meat is very under-rated.

There is a National Squirrel Cook-off in Bentonville AR every year. I went this year and was literally disgusted!

Nowhere could I find fried squirrel with biscuits and gravy. Squirrel dumplings? Fuhget about it!
A bunch of Chef Paul wannabes cooking up squirrel with exotic spices and "Southwestern Flair". It's a freaking squirrel! Fry that sucker or simmer him to pieces and let's eat!!!

Exactly!

Mmm, a Ruger American .22? That'd be fun.....BUT KNOW! I DON"T NEED ANOTHER .22!

But...hmm...I might WANT one.... I still like shooting squirrel with my Mk 2 pistol, though. Heck, it's more accurate than my 10/22!

I do have an extremely accurate old Remington bolt gun, though. I got it for my 9th birthday, 54 years ago. It's still a fine shooter.

Old ways do die hard, especially when they seem to be better.
I'd bet that Remington was, and still is, a Whizz (and I do mean that in the nicest way possible).:)

Yeah, I need no other .22 bolt gun for practical reasons, but I'm a bit of a Ruger fanboy and that American sounds like an accurate, yet affordable, rifle. :D
You and me both. Love their stuff. Also - spanked another fox squirrel today...

Golden bullets suck - I agree but they seem okeydoke for hunting.

:D

I kill most of mine with my Anschutz 1502 17 Mach 2. And indeed, I eat all of them; delicious!! The only tough squirrel is an old timer that has not been properly cooked.

Squirrel Conversation Overheard Between B & C From A Kind Hearted Squirrel Hunter

C: "Hey, B.....! What cha' been doing?"
B: "Squirrel hunting, and I saw the funniest thing the other day! I came up on a couple of squirrels, and they were (making love)!"
C: "So, what cha' do?"
B: "Well, C......, I didn't have the heart to shoot 'em"
C: "Then what?"
B: "I let 'em finish, then I got both of 'em!":D
