I recently got my european mount back. I think the guy did a really nice job.

I tried doing a mule deer on my own last year and it took forever...never turned out anywhere near as nice as this. I might end up bringing the mulie to him too and see if he can brighten it up for me. He uses a "warm chemical bath" process. No idea what it entails...but it sure gets it white.

Lets see some of your european mounts if you have them.

Looks great! Still waiting on mine.

I really dig euro mounts, especially on elk. They are too dang big to shoulder mount!

Yeah dude...my wife said 'you have to get it mounted just like the deer.' When I told her it would stick out about 4 feet from the wall she was shocked. We'd need a bigger house for a shoulder mount!

Yeah it's no joke. I didn't get vaulted ceilings so I couldn't mount one either. It'd have to go in the bedroom.

We're probably gonna add on a family room and I'll make sure I can fit an elk in there just in case I ever have too :)

The one I killed week before last is getting euro mounted too. This will be my first one to do this way. I'll post it when he's done.

My taxidermist uses a process similar to what the OP described. He uses some kind of heated water/degreaser that he says keeps the skull from yellowing

I skin them and then hang them in a fence row for a year. Bring them in and scrub them after that. Its a nasty process but maybe not as bad as boiling them from what I've seen.

I scrubbed one in clorox and it got really nice and white but I've been told that you can damage a skull that way. I don't see how it hurt it any but maybe the bones will break down over time. I just hang them in my barn so getting them super clean/sanitary isn't quite as big of an issue.

Skin the head when fresh and remove as much meat as possible. Boil up head, don't over boil. Get out your power washer and carefully power wash the heads clean. Go carefull when power washing the brains out otherwise you get covered, I know from experience. Bleach with peroxide. What they use at the ladies hair salong is ok. Don't use household bleach as the skull will turn yellowish.

I prefer the type of skull mount in Shoghund's trophy room, where the teeth are off and the skull lies flat on the board. The best European mounts are done this way (in my opinion).

I much prefer European mounts, the furry ones are much more expensive and always end up dusty and ratty looking.

I did this one from a ten point I shot on opening day of buck gun season.. IMG_0137_zpscwazggqo.jpg IMG_0113_zpsknlohdgs.jpg IMG_0088_zpstyoxkasf.jpg ..The worst part was skinning the head.I didn't bleach it, and there is still some cartlige in the snout, but it dosn't smell, so I'm not gonna fool with it anymore,at least for the time being.
