My first handgun was a Ruger Single Six I got when I was about 15. Many years later I gave it to my BiL as a gift shortly before he passed away. It was an excellent revolver.

A couple of years ago I bought a brand-new Blackhawk 45colt/45acp convertible with a 7.5" barrel from Bud's. I gradually realized it was one of my very favorite range toys. Then I saw a slightly rusty Single Six that was missing a piece - I bought it for $135 and fixed it easily (a $20 part and some cold blue). Then I saw a 357 Blackhawk in good shape for $300 and couldn't resist. Then the other day I snagged a 32 H&R Single Six for $400 - not as good a deal, but they are kind of rare. All of the used ones have 6.5" barrels. It is an easy guess that these will be my favorite range toys for quite some time.

Does anyone have advice for some kind of finish for the alloy frame of the 22? I cold blued the barrel, but I'm not sure what to do about the rest of it.

Please excuse the poor quality cell phone picture. I'm sure some of you will be able to add better ones! :)

Howdy

Yeah, I like Ruger Single Actions. Second only to S&W revolvers.

Here is the first one I ever bought, a 45 Colt/45 ACP convertible. Bought it back in 1975, paid $135 for it.

There are a few more floating around that I do not have photos of.

The alloy frames have a baked on finish, might be hard anodize, might be powder coat. Not really sure. If you want to refinish the grip frame you might look into seeing if you can get it powder coated or hard anodized locally. This will require polishing off all the old finish. Or you might just spray or brush on a black enamel paint. Might even try Krylon paint.

If the frame of the recently found Single Six need re-finishing there's really only a couple of options. One of the gun coat paints is one and having it cleaned and anodized is the other. I know someone has a product for blackening aluminium and I saw it in use. The results were poor enough that I would not recommend you bother.

Some aluminium alloys will not anodize that evenly. But that might prove to be a "feature" depending on the nature of the color variation.

That leaves us with one of the gun coating paint products. You really want to use THAT instead of a do it yourself product since many gun cleaning solvents will attack lesser paint products.

If you do re-finish it in either a coating or anodizing you may want to consider a yellow'y-gold variation or some other variation on a brass colored theme. It would look quite slick on the otherwise black finish.

Yeah, I like 'em. They're cool, they're fun, they're reliable, they're accurate, they're economical, they hold their resale value, and they're not picky about ammo like semi-autos can be.
What's NOT to like ! :D

single-six

After many years of wishing, finally picked up a single-six with 22lr & 22mag cylinders yesterday. Shot it today for the first time. Very nice. Really liked the pop of the 22 mag. Many glass bottles will fall to this little gem in the years to come!

Yes. Don't have one yet. Just the da's. I want the convertible .45 acp/colt convertible with the 4 1/2" or 5 1/2" barrel blue steel bad. Also like the single rimfire series and the black hawk hunter or super blackhawk. These are on the short list of fire arm purchases I have in mind.;)

I have a .44 magnum old Vaquero. Couldn't get it to shoot until a friend
gave me a bunch of Keith 250 Grain bullets in .44 Special cases. Shoots
clover leaves. I also have a .327 Federal Magnum stainless 4 inch. One of
the sweetest shooting guns I have ever shot.

I own 5 each including .22 convertable, .44mag, .45LC, and .45acp. I shoot them all and enjoy them all. Always on the lookout for more.

I have more Ruger single actions than any other type of gun. My first gun was a Single-Six convertible 25 years ago and I have a half a dozen right now and have gone through a few dozen others over the years. Great guns!!

SA..

Just for the amusement of my fellow Ruger SA owners...did you see this little jewel of a comment??

"honestly......within a generation, revolvers are going to fall out of favor, pretty hard

"im gonna catch a lot of flack for this......but revolvers are outdated technology."

they are low capacity, limited caliber selection, and larger than a semi-auto.....and honestly, they dont really have any benefit over a modern semi auto."

1 Single Seven in .327 Federal and a Super Blackhawk in .480 Ruger on the way.

Yeah, I saw that. Unbelievable. He probably thinks a Browning M2 is outdated technology as well. And not stylish enough either........ Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're gonna catch some flak buddy.

I came very close to buying a Ruger Super Single Six as my very first handgun until I found a deal on a used S&W Model 17.

I missed out on buying a couple of 50th Anniversary .357 Blackhawks in 2010; I would still like to have a couple of those. Ruger has not chosen to make them a regular catalog item but the equivalent "Flattop" is now available in a convertible .357/9mm, in blue or stainless with a choice of tube lengths. In my opinion that would make an excellent choice of a first Ruger SA.

Currently have a pair of SASS Edition New Vaqueros in .357 that I use for cowboy action shooting; they have never missed a beat.

I was sniffing around an (out of production) Bisley Blackhawk in .41 Magnum when a friend, who is a big fan of the Ruger Bisleys, showed me his just-introduced .44 Special Flattop Bisley Blackhawk. I had to snap one up with the 4.6 inch barrel.

The "Flattops" are made on the medium sized frame used for the New Vaquero and I really like the proportion of those midsized guns.

I saw yesterday that Davidson's has a bunch of Single Six revolvers in .32 H&R Magnum. All of them are blued with a 5.5 inch barrel. These are pretty nifty revolvers, too.

There's a lot to like in Ruger's single action lineup.
