I need some serious help convincing :banghead: my wife, who is Brazilian and thus has very little concept of what liberty means to Americans, that California, despite its nice weather and beautiful beaches, is a place to get very far away from as fast as possible. (As fast as possible is 2007, but it's a big task, so I want to get started as soon as possible.)

Most Brazilians I know are socially liberal. If your wife is liberal too you will have a hard task indeed.

The vacation in Texas idea is a good one, just don't do it in the summer. :)

I don't know what kind of home you live in but if you were to look at some real estate in other parts of the country on the Internet she will see that her standard of living would improve outside of California. In addition to housing being much more reasonable tax rates outside of the PRK are generally lower. You might want to try this approach.

Good Luck,

Michael

Just tell her this:

Llevo los pantalones, mujer, no tu!

That ought to straighten things out.........:D

Heh, Riley. That might ensure that one of them moves out of California, but I don't think that's what he was after. :)

Are y'all planning to have kids?

If so, point out that CA is rated 44th in the union when it comes to public schools. If she doesn't know, point out that we only have 50 states. 50-44=6 states worse than us.
Pretty sad.
Of course, I think public education is a sham, anyway, but that's beside the point.
Honestly, if she lives here and can't see already that it sucks, I'm not sure there's help.
Trade her in for a new model....:p

How about comparing $1.79/gal gas in SC to what you are paying.
How about typical 3 bedroom 2 bath 2 car garage house payment of $550/month? How do those figures compare to California?

I second the economic arguments. If you own a house you might even go so far as to get a market appraisal then get some real estate info from other places in the south. The idea of having a hundred acres and a 3000 square foot house for the price of a 2 bedroom house next to a sewage plant in Kali might sway her mind. Before I found a place in the Garden of Eden I was looking at NM and AZ real estate and saw it was pretty reasonable as compared to Kali, but you can't beat the Gulf Coast for really good prices.

If she is Brasilian she would have trouble adapting to the cold, so my vote would be one of the southern tier of states even if not Texas, or to move to southern Oregon.

Has she ever shot a gun?

I have found that the quickest way to convert a liberal into a freedom-loving patriot is to take them shooting.

Ductape, One or two of those tick, and she will never leave california again! :what: What are you trying to do!
But seriously, My liberal wife keep talking about how she want to MOVE to California:barf: The job market in her field is better there, but no job is worth giving up your rights!

A few talking points:

When I worked in Texas, the company transferred in an exec from California on short notice to fill an empty position. I had the pleasure of informing him that Texas has NO STATE INCOME TAX! California, as we know, dips deeply into its citizens' pockets.

Florida also has no income tax, but it does have those nice beaches & sultry climate.

Traffic almost anywhere is better than southern CA.
