I love a fine glossy rifle as much as anybody. But the rifles that really fire my imagination are the much loved, much used, rifles that show everything from "character" to rough service, to "just shy of abuse". That great old Winchester with 10% of the bluing left that's still driving tacks and filling freezers. Sadly, apart from cosmoline soaked milsurps, I have no such rifle.

No pictures here, either -- my digital camera won't upload for some reason.

But I have:

Stevens Favorite with tang sight
Stevens #26 Crack Shot
Springfield M1922 MKII
M1898 Krag, "sporterized" about a century ago, with a cocking piece sight.
Savage M99 in .308 Win, made about 1958
M1905 Ross in .303

Same boat, no pictures. I do have, however, a pre-accutrigger Savage .308 that I really like and use a lot. Original cheap stock and all. It got beat up enough that I plugged and masked everything off, shot it with primer and Krylon. Right now it's a mottled mix of O.D. green and brown. Works just fine on "yotes in Ohio and deer in W.V.

I've owned this rifle since I was 11 years old,,,

I've owned this rifle since I was 11 years old,,,
And I turned 64 years old last November.

By the time I left high school this rifle had accounted for,,,
Three deer and an Arkansas razorback boar.

She (Bertha) is a K-98 Mauser in 8mm,,,
This one was made in the Orberndorf factory in 1944,,,
Or at least that was what an appraiser told me a few years ago.

My great uncle Bantie brought this back from Europe,,,
He gave it to his younger brother (my grandpa),,,
Who in turn gifted it to me. :D

I have the original sling for it,,,
The leather is too old to use but I have it oiled.

I do remember losing the hand guard way back when,,,
I am soooooooo glad that my Pop wouldn't let me "sporterize" the stock.

Last year shooting Prvi Partizan ammo,,,
I held a 2-3" group at 100 yards,,,
Off of a rest of course.

I bought a polymer stock for it a few years back,,,
I loaned it to a good friend who took several feral hogs with it.

She may be 72 years old,,,
But she still knows how to dance.

Here's a couple. The roller is a 1902 in 7mm Mauser. It is in good shape with a good bore, but it's been around the block a couple of times.

The Krag is a 98, all original and untouched with a serial # in the high 450,000s, so it is one of the last ones made. It has about the worst bore I ever saw, so bad I hesitated to fire it at first. I pulled a bullet on a factory round and dropped the charge bu 20%. It digested that with no trouble, along with subsequent factory loads and seemed to hit where I aimed. I decided to try it out at 100 yards.

It hit P,O,A. and shot a two inch 5 shot group with Remington 180 grain factory loads. Proof that a bore doesn't have to look good in order to shoot well.

And I dont know why my pics always seem to end up upside dawn. They are rightside up on my screen.

My military M-24/47 has been kicked around a bit, but she has the best trigger I've felt on any military grade Mauser,
even better than my German 98. She'll print 5 shots into 2" @ 100 benched with military sights.
The only one to do that to date in my collection. :D Generally it's 3"-4" @ 100

Here's my old 8mm Turkish Mauser, Hell on deer with 150 gr Hornady spire points. I had to quit using it for deer, it would put a hole about 4"dia on the way out.
Sorry for the cheesy pic but it's all I have without emptying out my safe.

My other old beaters have all been refinished.

I have my dad's old Remington pump in .35 REM., and old 30-30, and my dad's Winchester 74 from around 1940.

Spanish 1916 Mauser, 100 years young, originally .308. She was sporterized many years before I was born, and in her latest rebirth wears a 70 year old German 8mm Mauser barrel, but because of the old receiver, I only shoot cast bullet loads.

This was when I was just starting to work up a good load...then the Scorpion grabbed my attention...
