Romanian AK Refurb Project *update 4/16*

Well I got yet another ak in need of some refinishing. Thought I would do an ongoing post of the steps involved in making this thing a beauty.

A little about myself I guess. I joined the army many moons ago, and graduated to a foreign ops unit, then was headhunted into the CIA's Russian intelligence division where I worked for 10 years before retiring. As you might expect, I grew to love the ak in all its variants, and now in my leisure I love restoring them to their proper dignity. I have over 50 at the present.

First a before pic.

Hard to see from the pic, but the metal is badly worn in multiple spots from long term storage. (Made in 1969 and never shot) Not too hard to see is the horrible wood condition. It had been soaked in penetrating oil (I'm guessing) and who knows what else, so I made it the first problem to tackle.

First thing was a good sanding, working my way up to a 220 grain. I heated it in a oven for a few days to drive out as much of the contaminates as I could, wiping down what oozed out a few times a day until it was pretty dry.

Next was the staining, using a combination of different RIT colors until I was happy. Then a week-long application of tung oil, sitting in a low temp oven in between coats.

Finally a polyurethane finish to a glossy sheen. (Some hate it, but I like a little gloss)

Finished - Note: The wood grip is currently being completed as I just received it 2 days ago. The grip on their now is just one I had lying around.

Next up is preparing the metal for its finish. Its going to be a flat black, but I want to do something a little different this time with the details. I'm going to put on my thinking cap and see what I could do, or if anyone has any suggestions feel free to tell me!

The wood looks good! :)

Get some Brownells Aluma Hyde II for the paint. Great stuff and made to paint guns with. You do need to follow the directions pretty much to the letter, but its well worth the effort. It takes about a week to cure and you do have to leave it a lone while it does. They also have some good videos you can watch on application. They apply to any paint too, not just the Aluma Hyde II.

Take the wood and grip off before you paint. I just taped off the handguard wood rather than fiddle with it and it was fine.

I drop a piece of "all thread" down the barrel and secure it at the chamber and muzzle with fender washers. I leave about a foot or so out the end of the muzzle and put a couple more fender washers there to, so I can hang it there. The rod gives you something to hold onto while you paint and lets you easily hang it.

I use wire hangers for anything else.

Tape up what you dont want to paint, like the insides of the action.

Make sure you take your time and set everything up ahead of time. Also degrease everything twice with Gun Scrubber, etc, and also degrease your hands while your at it. Some heat the gun up to swear the oil out. I never did and have yet to have any trouble, but I did degrease it well.

Good Luck.

AK103K: I'm more fond of Durakote. How have you found the Aluma Hyde to hold up? I know quite a few people that love it.

Mike U: Agreed! Thats one reason I chose the tung oil treatment. I find it really brings the grain out.

Mike the Wolf: Thanks, and yes, they really are comfy!:D

I've painted a lot of stuff with Aluma Hyde II and have been very happy with it. Guns, stocks, scopes, knives, even a bicycle. All have held up well to use. It seems to be impervious to even the harsher gun cleaning solvents too.

I havent tried Duracoat, but I hear a lot of people are happy with it too.

I think I might try that then just to do something different. Order and on its way. :D

Here's a few more to see the condition of the metal beforehand and the stocks cured out.
