I don't usually load my 9mm with 147gr FMJ/JHP but I got a some ZERO 147gr JHP and want to try them over Hodgdon Titegroup.

Looking at the Lyman 49th Edition data manual it shows the OAL for 147gr FMJ to be 1.115". I don't think I can get even the shorter 147gr JHP bullet that deep to achieve a 1.115 OAL.
What OAL do look for when loading 147gr. jacketed bullets?

Thanks For Your Time

Not having used Zero 147 JHPs, I would have to go back to first principles and seat them so as to fit the magazine, fit the chamber, and feed from magazine to chamber. Might take some experimentation.

I just received an order today of 147gr TMJ from Everglades and was going to post the very same question. 1.115 does seem questionable. I also saw that using Titegroup with a starting charge of 3.2. I have a Berry's bullet chart that recommends 1.160 for an OAL. I also have Win Auto Comp powder that I just used on 115gr TMJ with a 1.100 OAL. I'll follow this thread to get some additional inputs. I haven't used that bullet but I load the RMR 147 "Target" HPs to 1.09-1.10 for one of my pistols the rest at 1.135.
With less than MAX charges you can shorten a reasonable amount. IMO
If in doubt backing off the start charge a hair (.1 or .2gr) shouldn't hurt.
Work up from there.

2.8 Titegroup 5" 9mm 1911
RMR 147 HP
5 vels 770 765 772 806 782
Average 779.00
ES 41
SD 16.31
PF 114.513
These were light but functioned fine.
Listed MAX 3.6gr Titegroup with Titegroup and a 147XTP (different bullet) was 929fps

This is just my experience with a below start charge test. Your results will be different.
so usual discalimer
Neither I nor THR assume any responsibility for using charges outside of the recommend range.

I checked the ammo shelf.
Winchester 147 gr HP, whether SXT or Silvertip are 1.117".
I have always thought the Zeroes looked a lot like Winchesters, so that is where I would start.

It was the Lyman manual where I saw the 147gr TMJ RN that listed the OAL of 1.115 using Hodgdon Titegroup with a starting charge weight of 3.2grs. I'll load 10-20 rounds and verify them with the chamber checker then in the magazines and chambering in the semi autos. Then off to the range for the ultimate testing. Thanks for all the inputs! Start longer... see if they work... I still think it's a typo and should be 1.15". 147 TMJs loaded to 1.1 are pretty dang short...

I agree! 115gr TMJ OAL of 1.100. 147gr TMJ RN projectiles are .50 longer than 115gr RN. Seating them at 1.115 has to be a typo. A call to Lyman might be in order to verify it. Ha! But thanks!

I've loaded Zero 147gr JHP...

Zero 147gr JHP 1.128" 3.3gr Promo 933fps (G17), 841fps (G43)
Zero 147gr JHP 1.128" 3.4gr Promo 943fps (G17), 849fps (G43)

Either ran fine...but I preferred the 3.3gr load.
