Looking at the Lyman manual for a 147gr TMJ RN bullet it calls for a starting charge of 3.2grs of Titegroup with a COL of 1.115 which appears to be quite deep. Berry's calls for a COL of 1.160. Any input is appreciated. I have quite a bit of Titegroup which I use for the 45ACP and Win Auto Comp which I've used with the 115gr TMJ RN 9mm.
And has anyone used Win Auto Comp for the 147gr TMJ RN 9mm? Can't seem to locate a correct charge and COL for this. Thanks, John

Welcome to THR!
I haven't used that bullet but for a jacketed bullet Hodgdon lists
147 GR. HDY XTP Winchester AutoComp .355" 1.100" Start 3.6gr 827 27,900 PSI MAX 4gr 916 32,800 PSI.

I load most of my plated loads at start to mid jacketed charges.
With the RMR 147gr "Target" HP I am loading to 1.09 OAL.

A suggestion if I may.

Lymans data is about right on for 147gr 9mm bullets.

For pistol I never use the OAL listed in the book. I simply load to plunk and be done with it.

When I started using 147g I would load long and had all sorts of accuracy issues. I reduced my charge and went with a shorter OAL and tightened the groups up nicely. I think 147g has a ton of variables when it comes to length and firearm dependent. I use 2 totally different loads in my VP9 and my M&P.

I'm guessing the loads generally use such short OALs because there are a few guns out there that need a short OAL, and it is generally safe to lengthen OAL for a given load but not the other way around.

147gr TMJ RN 9mm ... Berry's calls for a COL of 1.160
Are you using Berry's RN or Speer TMJ?

If you are indeed using Speer trademarked TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) plated bullets, they have comparable plating thickness to Gold Dot HP bullets (around .015" thickness) - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=9927091#post9927091

I have used jacketed load data with Speer TMJ bullets and gotten mostly good results. If you are using regular plated bullets around .004" thickness, I found accuracy starts to deteriorate if I use higher than mid rang load data.

With thicker plated bullets (.010"-.014" thickness), I have used mid-to-high range jacketed load data with good results.

Auto Comp for the 147gr TMJ RN 9mm? Can't seem to locate a correct charge and COL for this.
I have so far tested AutoComp for 115/124 gr bullets but not 147 gr bullet and I get accuracy with higher charges.

Since OAL/COL depends on your barrel, I would first determine the working OAL then conduct powder work up - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?p=8864541#post8864541

If you are using Berry's 147 gr RN, I would guess your working OAL be more around 1.160" as most factory 9mm barrels have longer leade/freebore that accommodate FMJ/RN bullets to 1.169"+.

Since Hodgdon load data lists AutoComp 3.6 - 4.0 gr for XTP JHP bullet at shorter 1.100", you should be OK using this load data if using longer 1.160" with TMJ/Berry's plated RN as your velocity will be less than 1000 fps.

Thanks for all the inputs guys! Bds, I'm using Everglades 147gr TMJ RN. I been using the 115gr bullets from them for quite some time now with much success. I have used Berry's as well however, not the 147gr TMJ RN which I noticed calls for a OAL of 1.160. Their chart is what actually caused me to question the Lyman manual's OAL of 1.115 for the 147gr TMJ RN. Interesting the High Road post #41 you reference as I can work the OAL from that as well. Thanks for your input! John P
