Texas... finally
I sold my only 44 a couple of years ago. I still have a ton of ammo loaded up for it and miss having one in the safe. I've recently stumbled across two very different revolvers, a Super RedHawk and a Super Blackhawk in that caliber. I'm having trouble deciding which ones to go with. And as much as I would like to, I cannot justify both. Both are stainless. Both 7.5" barrels. Both are used but minty. Whichever is chosen it will get a scope at some point.

Uses will be:
Range toy, its primary role
Shooting pretty warm ammo thru, on occasion
Banging steel at longish range
Hopefully a hunt at some point

Thanks in advance for any help y'all can provide.

I have a redhawk and a super Blackhawk in 44, and if i was planning on scoping one it would be the Blackhawk. They just feel better with the extra weight on top, and its easier to use the single action trigger with the scope anyway. Others will probably disagree, but that's my take on it.

Both are bull-strong guns.

The deciding factor is if you want SA or DA.

I have a Redhawk and Super Redhawk and am pleased with both.

The Super Redhawk has the built in scope mounts and comes with rings which would make it a little easier to scope. Accuracy wise there is no difference, only thing it comes down to is your personal preference. I prefer the single action but plenty of folks like the doubles. Your call.

It is a win-win choice so there is no mistake to be made here. You have the classic good looks of the Blackhawk versus the more modern action and better scope attachment system of the Redhawk. The big appeal of the Redhawk for me would be the improved system of loading and unloading (and showing clear) afforded by the swing-out cylinder.

I had the same conundrum a couple of years ago and went with the Black hawk. Now, don't get me wrong, I absolutely love it and won't even consider parting with it when I get the Red Hawk but I do wish I had gone with the Red hawk.

My reason for wanting the Red Hawk is that I use mine as a range toy and loading and unloading a SA gets a bit tedious to me. I also really like the option to be able to shoot both SA or DA.

Having said that, both are awesome. They are rock solid, look cool and will be around for your grand kids.

I would have a tough time deciding between a Redhawk and a Super Blackhawk. Never really cared much for the styling of the Super Redhawk. Over the years I have had a Redhawk with a 5 1/2" barrel and two Super Blackhawks, both with 7 1/2" barrels. The Redhawk was for carrying for bear in Alaska while the Super Blackhawks were mainly range toys. I liked the size and heft of the Redhawk but really didn't use it in double action all that much. If I were looking to get back into a .44 Magnum I would probably go with another Super Blackhawk only this time I think with a 5 1/2 barrel.

If you don't have a preference for SA or DA then you just need to flip a coin and be done with it.

I have both, the Super Redhawk and Super Blackhawk. I've owned and hunted with the SRH for 20+ years. It is probably the most favorite of all my handguns to shoot. A few years ago I obtained the Super Blackhawk. I enjoy shooting this one too, and I've taken to hunting with it where I find I'll have a 50 yard or less shot at deer or bear.

As for which one you want, it depends on whether or not you will eventually decide you want to throw a scope on it. The SRH has the built in mounting points for a scope. Yes, you can get a mount for the SBH or even get the SBH Hunter model, but I find the Hunter model tends to be muzzle heavy when a scope it mounted.

Thanks all for the comments. The SRH is much closer so I'm going to go and take a look at it on Tuesday morning. I will report back.

I have a blued Redhawk 5.5 inch barrel and used to own a Super Blackhawk Bisley "Hunter". I sure liked the later and for what you describe, that would be my choice. You cannot go wrong with a Super Redhawk.

I'd go with the one that feels better in your hand.
I had & sold a blackhawk, just cuz it felt too big.

I have a Redhawk - that gun is more accurate than me.

It's fun to pull out the big ammo now & then.
23 gr of Lil' Gun under a 240 gr HP-XTP 1.600 OAL, that'll wake you up. - lol :what:

Hey Hondo, not to derail the thread but watch out with that LilGun. It gives very good velocities however it has been proven to erode forcing cones after a very short time.

Theories are that the higher nitroglycerine content burns hotter and leads to the issue. I am not a chemist or a metalurgist but Bob Baker over at Freedom Arms explicitly recommends against LilGun in magnum handguns.

Now back on course....

Either gun is a fun range toy and a more than adequate hunting gun. Flip a coin and buy one now, but I can almost guarantee that you will be wanting the other later on down the line.

IMHO the 44mag is one of the most useful handgun calibers. Can be used with very mild loads for plinking or loaded up to it's potential for hunting....well, pretty much everything.

They are both amazing guns, however, for looks and just long range shooting and maybe a hunt or two, I would have no difficulty in going with the Blackhawk.

Nothing looks better than a nice SA Cowboy Gun!

Most times for ringing long distance steel or hunting or even range work you will probably shoot in SA. Since the Super Blackhawk was desinged as a SA revolver it has a better SA trigger than the Super Redhawk. If a DA trigger isn't important to you go with the Blackhawk.

Another reason for me, while I really like the looks of the Blackhawk/Super Blackhawk I do not like the Super Redhawk at all. I just can't like that frame although the standard Redhawk isn't bad at all.

I've owned and shot both....currently have a super Blackhawk hunter model. For me, when shooting large caliber revolvers 99% of the time I shoot single action.....so if it were me I'd go the super Blackhawk route.
