Thinking up making up some 45 Colt loads with rubber bullets for dog and coyote deterrents.
  • Will these work adequately at say 25 to 30 yards?
  • Has anyone tried a bit of powder or perhaps used magnum primers instead of standard to get a bit more speed?
  • I see you can get factory brass in 45 colt for blank loads (flash hole is enlarged). Do I need the larger flash hole or does regular brass work just fine (will be fired from a revolver)? I'd want to mark or segregate any enlarged flash hole brass, so factory head stamped may be a good way if it is needed.

I have some 38 special that took a shot shell primer. I never shot them more than 50 feet. I do not think that they would be effective much past that. I only used them indoors for target practice.

With a revolver you definitely need to enlarge the flash holes to prevent the primers from backing out and locking the cylinder. And, yes magnum primers help.

Lot less fuss to use a hose. Best canine deterrent is removing any food source.
The issue is the type of rubber. Riot control rubber bullets are India rubber(very hard stuff) and will kill a coyote or Fido stone dead if you hit him on the head. Break ribs for sure.
And there's no reliable load data.

Only have water close to the house. The only food source is cats and chickens and I won't get rid of those.

I don't mind hurting the coyotes, and I may even move up to a bullet for them. The roaming dogs are more of an annoyance. I've only caught them on my cameras and not been here to try to scare them away or see if I can get close to look for a collar and their home.
