I have been carrying full-size 1911s (and oversize double-stack 1911s) for years. I am about to buy a double-stack 9mm 1911 for carry.

The Karh MK9 was mentioned, I prefer the larger (or not as small) K9, since I can actually get all of my fingers on the grip.
I had its polymer sister, the P9 and it had noticeably more muzzle flip, and a thinner grip I didn't really care for.
I grew to hate my PM9 due to the short and thin grip.
One downside to the Kahrs is that holster selection is much better for the compact plastic guns such as the Glock 43 and Shield.
On another note, I carried 1911s for years, even one with a weaponlight IWB, so weight is a non-issue.
