.44 mag swc

I've carried a .44 Special at times loaded with a 240 gr. SWC loaded to 915 f.p.s. and felt confident with that. Up close that's a plenty adequate load.

I am now carrying a 3" Bulldog most often and am working up loads for 240 SWC and 200 DEWC . From the Bulldog I will happy with 800 to 900 fps. For the 200 gr I would like to be closer to 900 fps. I hope to have access to a chronograph and not depend on others data. I use to carry a larger 3" 44mag but like the lighter weight and find inside 25 yards I do ok.

That (in my opinion) will make for an uncontrollable 2nd/3rd/4th follow-on shots
SWC is good. "Magnum" in short/light barrels is not.
Stick w/ 44 Special (a la BW above) for best results.

The old Lyman Keith 429421 is about as good as it gets for a .44 cal. SWC. The only "carry" issue might be over penetration. It wouldn't be on my preferred list for personal defense use in urban areas.

Maybe something a little different would be in order? how about an HP version of 429421?

Mihec makes a mould that is that boolit with interchangeable HP pins. You can have small round hole, large round hole, or a Pentagonal hole or a solid. All with the same mould.

Good point. Mihec's molds are top shelf.

I've got a Lyman 429348 mold. 180 gr wadcutter. Load those to about 1000 fps and you'll get decent performance.
