I have a 9mm Hi-Power with the serial number starting in T283. The Browning website only shows that it goes to T258. Anyone out there that can help me out
Dissuade yourself of the notion that the Browning website contains any accurate information. Recognize that serial number ranges are all over the place, and most of the experts (of which I am not) are going to need to see proof marks, inspector marks, and the like in order to give you a definitive date (or something close).
Suffice it to say that the T-series Hi-Powers are considered desirable.
Hello and welcome Sean, Unfortunately late T-Series serials overlapped early C-Series serials, confusing things for us Hi Power fans. The T-serials continued long after the T-258 you cited. For instance, T-374117 is shown in Blake Steven's book. I have seen photos of others significantly higher than the T-258xxx, or T-261xxx commonly cited. I suspect your gun is approx. '69 - '70 production.
I have a "c" series Hi Power (as I recall) and it's '73. My understanding is that " t " series guns were from the 1960's or maybe very early '70's. They are supposed to be among the most collectible of post ww2 Hi Powers. Sorry I can't help any further.
If you plan to try to research and understand FN serial numbering, please make arrangements in advance for your future care and welfare in a quiet rest home. Your family will appreciate it.
