SPNY

Neat firearm! I like the sp101 quite a bit. A lot of guys value weight alone and have never tried to empty it as fast as possible. I tried an airweight and feel very confident my sp101 was the right choice.

That is a VERY GOOD choice and being a L.E. gun it's probably only been fired a few times (like once or twice a year). The only mod those guns REALLY need is to round off all of the sharp corners on the trigger. Ruger's revolver triggers are cruel triggers.

Interesting variant! I wasn't aware that the NYPD ever bought any Ruger SP101s. Let us know how it fares at the range and what your carry load is going to be.

If it's stamped SPNY, it's possibly a state police gun, not an NYPD gun. Two totally different agencies with nothing in common.

Officers in the NYPD bought their guns from their equipment allowance, so I doubt their guns were stamped at all.

Just shoot it double action only. That why it's been modified like that. On a DA revolver you really never need to touch the hammer.

These were made specifically for the NYPD, as in "New York CITY Police Department".

Also this is a DAO revolver. You couldn't cock it even if you wanted to, no single action sear. :)

I really hoped someone would know I was kidding. But an actual question about this gun: If it had a hammer spur, could the gun be cocked? Is it just a SP101 with a hammer without the spur?

No it is DAO. What that means is their is no single-action sear surface. It is impossible to cock this gun for a single action shot, even if you grab the hammer and pull it back awkwardly.

What a lot of people will do is cut or grind the spur off their hammers. This does NOT make a DAO firearm. All it does is reduce the possibility of the hammer snagging on pants/clothes etc. as you draw, especially from the pocket. But it can still be cocked in single action as it still has the single action sear.

Interestingly, there is a bit of checkering on the very tip of the hammer on this gun. What that is used for is to have a place to better grips the hammer when disassembling the firearm as you have to put a little pin in the hammer strut to hold the mainspring in the compressed position so you can relieve tension off the action to remove the key parts. The hammer must be "cocked" to do this and it prevents slippage. :)

Awesome. Not sure it would be my cup of tea (I like spurs). But I certainly see the advantages of that style. Congratulations on the gun. It’s a great choice for an EDC. Has it been to the range yet?

Edit: I just saw you have now answered my question about the spur....twice. My apologies Cooldill.

I stand corrected. After doing some research, I find the guns marked SPNY were "special purpose". and indeed bought by the NYPD for field testing before they were allowed to be adopted for use.

They also had a special matte satin finish unique to them. They were issued to sgt's and detectives for testing, then when adopted, some were allowed to keep them. Some were marked with a star in the crane area by the armorers at Rodman's Neck, their range, to show they had been inspected by them.

Got it out to the range. 100 rounds no problem, easy to hold on target. Love the grips, this thing is a peach!
