You said you were using a 2x4, and, well, a 2x4 is not hard enough. You really need HARD wood, like oak or ash. Been exactly where you are, and finally got the dang thing apart with oak blocks and rosin, clamped in a really big vise.
 
If you want some free hardwood to use, many pallets are partially made of oak. The 2X4 part with the holes/slots for the fork is usually the hard wood. Lots of places will give you a pallet for the asking just to get rid of it.

Thanks, I have a few sitting out back in the burn pile. There are also some 3x3 Chinese boards that are harder than any wood I have ever seen. I have a block of that sitting on the drill press, but will save the 2x4 pallet runners just in case.
 
My newest bows riser is made from laminates of that stuff, cant remember what its called. That should work.
