What's wrong with bore snakes??

I keep a small collection of bore snakes along with a bore light in my truck for those times that I may come across a used longgun possibility in a Pawn Shop or the like. They are certainly very handy for that purpose. :)
That's a good idea. I got sliced on a revolver that had an artfully dirtied barrel. Somehow a little grime disguised damage that I saw immediately after I cleaned it.

So, a single improperly made product from a single company puts you off to a whole class of products?

Do you not buy cars because Ford Pintos?

Will you not buy a gun because Remington?

It just doesn't seem rational to say that you won't use bore snakes because one company produced a turd.

Its rational to me especially when a undetectable manufacturing flaw in a product so technically simple quite literally almost destroyed my rifle's barrel. I suspect it's irrational to accept the risk of ever using one again.

yup, it’s a risk vs. reward analysis and the risk isn’t worth it.

I am still puzzled how you guys get them stuck? I have used them in every thing from 22cal to 12 gauge and never once got one stuck or broken. I have worn out a few and thrown them away and even then I have never broken one. What are you guys doing to those things...

ETA: For those that have got them stuck are you getting them stuck in rifles, pistols or shotguns? I am assuming small bore rifle (17-30cal)?

I use them on everything. How exactly are you guys having all these problems? You planning on eating off these guns or shooting them?

What is done with a bore snake when it becomes dirty?

One gentleman in our shooting group is a neurosurgeon and is very fixated upon numbers, i.e. chrono readings, LabRadar, et al ; $5000 rifle, $4000 scope, hauled in a brand new, tricked out Jeep.

As I walk by his station, I see him pulling a rope down the tube, muzzle first, and see an array of empty cases strewn everywhere, including in the walkways. He picks them up at the end of the day.

I have great disdain for rude and overly forward behavior. Instead of saying something regarding what he was doing, I asked him his ultimate goal. He said, "Competition shooting, I suppose."

After six months of the crew watching this go on, one of our team must have said something to him because soon after I saw someone else bring up the rope issue and he said, "I know. I've already been ******* out about that..:fire:". Every time I walk by his station I pick up his cases and place them on his bench. And every time he says, "Thank you." In the words of Jeff Foxworthy, "Bless his heart."

just sayin'
