Beretta 92FS Anomalies

Hi all,

I have a Beretta 92FS that seems to have some anomalies:
  • First, it has a scuff mark on the barrel near the muzzle, predominately toward the left side; see pic. Is this normal and if so why scuffing just on the left side? Beretta.jpg
  • Secondly, the gun seems to shoot consistently left, despite the sights being aligned with a laser. Could the scuffing have something to do with this?
  • Lastly, the trigger pull force is 5.5 lbs, does this seem right for an unmolested 92FS? It feels heavy to me.

How much have you shot it? Was the mark there when you bought it, it after use?

Have other experienced shooters shot it to confirm it is shooting left? Could be just the way you shoot the gun. If you are newer to shooting jerking the trigger can cause shooting to the left. Recoil anticipation can make you shoot low. I had both these issues when I first started. Trigger control is very important
 
My slide/barrel doesn't wear like that. I suspect there is something a little "off" in the alignment.

If you're talking about the double trigger pull that's actually a tad light. If single, then, yeah, that's heavy.
 
The wear does not seem to be normal As far as the trigger pull I believe factory DA pull weight is about 12 lbs and the SA is set at about 5 lbs. I got out with my newly acquired Italian made 92FS yesterday. It is very likely the most accurate handgun that I've ever owned or shot among the many I've had over the years. These were the last two rounds fired yesterday. Federal AE 124 gr. FMJ.

I had a factory refurbed Beretta 92FS several years ago with the Y added to the serial number. It developed that same wear pattern on the barrel and more on one side than the other. It shot straight for me though and the 5+ lb. single action trigger pull seemed normal for a service/duty pistol.

Chicharrones: My serial number has a Z suffix. Was the Y you're talking about in place of the Z?

The "D" spring is the hammer spring from the "D" model 92, a double action only variant. The spring reduces the trigger pull weight. I believe the "D" spring is the equivalent of an 18 pound hammer spring.

Wilson Combat (and I assume other's) offers even lower weight springs. I believe I've seen the WilsonCombRep post elsewhere that the 14 pound spring will ignite pretty much everything, but if you go lower, you may have to makes sure you select your primers carefully.

Is this a used pistol? Are you the first owner? If it is still under warranty, I would let Beretta make it right.

If it is not under warranty: Has it been dropped or abused?

Have you miked the barrel at the rub scar? Is the barrel bulged? Is it out of round? Is the muzzle true to the bore?

How does it shoot? What kind of groups do you get at 15M from a rest?

Is it 100% reliable with military ball ammo?

The inverted Y was stamped near the original serial number after Beretta refurbished the gun.

The gun looked brand new when I got it, but had the exposed metal stamped Y on it and only had a 60 day Beretta warranty. It came with a lower price than new.

Thank you for responding. Interesting info on the "Y" marking.
 
Most of them will get a scuff mark in the same general area as yours, though that is a bit extreme (depending on how used it is). I would put a new locking block in it, along with a D spring. Put a new recoil spring in it while your at it.
 
A bit of wear is expected, but that looks excessive. Contact Beretta.

As far as the trigger goes, it sounds pretty nice to me if DA. If it's hitting left, you need to have others shoot it to verify, or put it in a rest. The wear marks may be indicative of a misalignment. Or not. More testing needed.
