I recently acquired a Beretta 92FS Police Special. With Speer and WWB 155 gr hardball, it consistently shoots about 6 to 8 inches low at 25 yards. This seems huge to me, and I don't have this with any other 9mm that I own or have shot.

Any ideas on what may be causing this?

Thanks.

Mine did the same thing, but add in to the left also. I am adding an adjustable rear. I was a bit disappointed. Thought it was me, but other have the same issue and same when off a rest. I don't know the fix but someone else may. You are not alone.

Heavier bullets normally impact higher, so I'm tempted to try that....but the military round is 112 grain, so the thing should work with 115 grain bullets.

Shooting low could be either something with the gun or technique. Unload the gun, drop the hammer, and leave the safety on. Hold it as if you were about to fire. Pull the trigger and watch the front sight (and only the front sight.) Does it dip slightly? The 92 is a big gun, if it doesn't fit someone's hand properly there is a tendency to pull the trigger both back and down. It will happen even on a bench rest. This can be easily overcome with practice. If it actually is the gun there isn't much you can do about it yourself. Beretta does not make different height rear sights to adjust the error so a trip to the factory might be in order.

For a right handed person, shooting low and to the left is a classic case of engaging the trigger with too much finger. Do the same thing I described above. Try using only the pad of your fingertip.

The 92FS that I purchased new from CDNN about a year back also shot about 3" low and to the left at 25 yards with my 115 gr. handloads. I addressed the problem by installing an LPA adjustable rear sight. The gun now shoots exactly to the point of aim at 25 yards, and is surprisingly accurate to boot!

(Funny thing is, I was at the indoor range a few weeks ago and the gentleman in the next lane was breaking in a brand new 92FS. He had the gun sandbagged and was shooting WWB ammo, and it too was shooting significantly low and left at 20 yards.)

My 92FS is very accurate with 124grn FMJ ammunition from American Eagle out to 20-30yrs. My carry ammo is 124grn +p+ Hydrashoks which are also spot on to 25yrds when I do my part. I have tried 155grn ammo before and it was very accurate at close range but I did notice what seemed like more deviation at the 20-30yrd mark, somewhere around 2-3 inches low.

"Try using only the pad of your fingertip."

That did it! I finally got back out to the range this evening (i should say it finally quit raining for a day), and by using the fingertip pad and a slightly firmer grip, the groups moved right up where they should be. What a nice pistol to shoot!

Thank much, man.

I had/have the same problem hight is OK but it shoots 1" to the left at 7 yards. I bought It only because I think it's a beautiful gun but I prefer my Glocks. I'll keep it just to have it but It's probably the gun I'm least happy with.

I had the same problem earlier today, almost got so frustrated that I wanted to sell it to the range I was at. I was shooting also with a Glock 21 .45 and a Beretta PX4 9mm and hitting perfect dead center while aiming center mass. I decided to throw in the 92fs which I hadn't shot in about a year and it destroyed my perfect target, although it did have a nice group at 25 yards in the 7 ring or about 6-7 inches low 6 o'clock.

I recently got out of the Marine Corps after 8 years and have consistently shot expert (4 times) and fired pacific division matches and shot very well (I was a Lance Coolie at the time), and since with the other 2 guns I was shooting perfect I know it's not technique. Which leads me to this question... I saw LPA sights mentioned earlier, is it hard to install or would I need to track down an armorer (Omaha, NE)? I saw their site and it looks like it may be the answer to my problem, I hate shooting kentucky windage with one gun if all my others are spot on. In the matches they offered to sway the sights left or right if you provided them with a good grouping, but up down from what I know is near impossible with stock sights, and of course my service 9mm was perfect even though it looked as weathered as a firearm can look.

Thanks in advance.

OK guys, is this a Beretta 96 or a converted 92 with a .40 cal barrel because I know of no commercial brand of ammo that loads 9mm in 155gr and the 92 is a 9mm? In the 9mm the military round is 124gr not 112gr.

If you are talking .40 cal then 155gr is on the light side and you may want to try some 180gr loads, they should shoot higher. As mentioned, higher velocity and lighter bullets shoot lower than a lower velocity and/or heavier bullet.

With my Beretta, POI is the area covered by the dot of the front sight.

Compared to my other pistols which have their POI at the top of the dot (think, dotting the "i").

Because of how my Beretta shoots if I try and shoot it the way I do my other pistols, it will seem to shoot low, until I realize what is happening.

Shooting analysis target

Makarov.com used to have a target that detailed what your shooting problems were based on where you were hitting the target. I consistently shoot down and to the right... so I'm squeezing the grip too hard and using a little too much trigger finger (comes from shooting revolvers double action).
Try their site and download that target. It will help you get back on track without having an expert standing over your shoulder.

wristtwister,

Is the target below the one you were talking about?

redbone,

My 92FS was dead on right out of the box, never adjusted the sights. There is always the possibility the gun has an issue but my best guess is that you're pushing the gun as you squeeze the trigger. I will say the trigger on Beretta is definitely not the best I have ever felt and I too find myself pushing the gun down on the squeeze.

Close, but no cigar...

That's a similar target, and it would work for the same purpose. The one on Makarov.com actually had a center point... but it's the same other than that.
When you're shooting all over the place, it's good to have something like that to help you concentrate on different things and correct the problems without the "what the >>>>" look on your face all the time...
