Okay so I was going to buy some butler creek covers tomorrow and measured my Nikon XR inline 3-9-40 and Leupold V x2 2-7-33 with my calipers in both inches and MM and I'm a hair confused. Butler creek says use the cap that is closest to my measurements for best results. Below is what I came up with.

Nikon objective is 1.983'' and 50.30mm. Now the MM shows closer to the 49.80 on Butler creeks website but the Inches is off because for the model that matches the MM its 1.960.

Nikon eye piece is 42.85mm and the BC number that's closest is 41.80mm while the inches is 1.690 and the number that matches is 1.646.

Leupold objective is 1.566'' and 39.50MM and BC closest number is 38.90mm.

Leupold eye piece is 1.555'' and 39.60mm and BC closest number is 39.60mm on the money. The inches don't match up right on the money but the MM do.

Do these numbers seem just way too off to you guys? I've had issues in the past when they used to list scope models of them being too large or too small. I'm kind of at a loss what to do now?

I'd greatly simplify and measure the proper section of the optic (some are stepped, etc) and match the diameter to the BC chart. I don't trust "libraries".

butler creek says measure the outside of each part of the scope with calipers due to the cap sitting over the housing. Once you have that measurement you have to scroll through their library and find what their MM and inch measurement closely matches yours but theirs seems to be way off. I could see if one was say 1.125 for my measurement and their 1.123 and they say it would fit but some of their measurements seem like it would be way to tight or loose with their extreme spread.

Do yourself a favor and get Vortex Defender Scope Caps instead. The multi-position, and flat fold features are well worth the difference over the Butler Creek Flip Caps. The Butlers are not bad, they’re quite good in fact, but the Vortex’s are great, in comparison.

Does BC not still have that table which is not optic brand-name specific? Here's their generic chart. They had a generic chart like the brand-specific. It's very large and covered each style of cover they make. These numbers are within spec of yours. https://www.brownells.com/guntech/butler-creek-flip-scope-cover-sizing-chart/detail.htm?lid=15840

EDIT: They totally changed the appearance but here it is. https://www.butlercreek.com/-/media/9c2b184a696e46079c6c95a51af4ff95.pdf

I cant pass up the $4.99 price tag for the BC though. :(

It has been my experience that the cap dimensions always seem smaller than my measurements by as much as .005-.015 or so. I have them on most of my scopes. I’ve used their chart and they’ve always fit for me..
