Reloading/work bench build

I’m no longer teaching. After my classroom was shot up, I tried to teach for a few more semesters. The way I was treated was criminal, so after a long recovery from the PTSD, I’m back in industry loving what I do. It’s been a tough road, and one that almost killed me on multiple ways. I still have rough days every now and then, and the FL shooting and constant exposure to it has been brutal, but I’m doing ok. So hopefully a few things I’m working on will pan out and good will become great. But in the mean time, I’m slowly getting back to things I love, like building stuff, shooting, and living out in the some of the most beautiful country a person can be blessed with.

A man without a workbench is, well, a man without a workbench. And a man with a workbench is, a man without two work benches .

When I built my son's reloading bench at his new home, I had to first build a work bench in order to achieve the objective. It worked out to be a blessing. The work bench now serves to help keep the young couple's 2 cars in working order.

Hokie,
I've read your various posts on your experience with the college shooting, the during and after. I hope you continue to heal and recover.
Academia is unfortunately full with too many anti-gun folks. In Florida when a campus carry bill was being worked in the legislature last year our college leadership was crying doom and gloom and pledging to fight it. I had a couple of frank discussions with some colleagues that are shooters, but were into the hype of "it will be dangerous with all these "kids" with guns around here." My premise is simple, number 1, legal carry is limited to 21 (with some exceptions) and older. What percentage of our student body would actually carry? What would stop someone from carrying now? If someone wanted to harm you, how would you defend yourself?

Yesterday, as I was waiting to begin an employee workshop scheduled for 10AM, one of the two co-facilitators tells me, "we can't start at ten, we have the student walkout." I think she read my look pretty well, as I just stared at her and said -- "I won't support it. However, you may go if you wish and express your first amendment rights." We proceeded to have a short discussion on the incident, where at some point I asked, "What would have stopped the attack?" The one wanting to go on the walkout actually surprised me, she said "outside of the guy not being born, I guess nothing." I can understand that sentiment.

BTW, I work in Miami, about an hour south from Parkland, but live about 30 minutes away.
On a related note, at least three of my troops (AF Reserve) are Broward Sheriff's Deputies. Two were on scene that day. But that's a topic for another venue.

Just so you guys know, I used Sheetrock screws today. They are firmly holding Sheetrock to studs. I also used 3” deck screws to frame in a door into an existing wall since I couldn’t nail into the end of the studs. Now I’m in the same shape as Hokie, waiting on Lowe’s.

Well yesterday was insanely busy work wise. So I couldn’t get away for a bit. I thought about stopping at the True Value when I was com8mg back from a meeting but I decided against it.

But I’m ready to get up, have a good breakfast then head on out to Lowe’s. Unfortunately it’s in the 20s in beautiful Central Va this morning and I’d rather stay in bed where it’s warm.

Today’s goals are to get the legs on the bench. Then get them braced. Anything extra will be gravy today as I have a few commitments later today. So if I don’t get the top cut and assembled it’ll be tomorrow’s project.

So, you’re telling us that you will only be devoting 30 min to your bench project today? A man has to have priorities. A man with an unfinished bench, is a man without a bench.

Well you’re right.
But tomorrow, I’ll finish it. Then I’ll be a man with a bench.

Right now I’m a man with a partly finished bench, a bag of bolts and a son who is more interested in making lunch than helping Dad.

Well I got the holes for the legs drilled and the bolts installed.
The L legs even without bracing are pretty strong and stable. In fact the bench is much more stable than I expected with just the legs bolted to the top frame. But since it’s for reloading and working on stuff they’re nowhere near stable enough.

Growing up I purposely called a level a plumber to mess with my Dad. He’s always get spun up and find things to retort with!

The other people is the required blood donation for any good project.

My son threw a nut to me instead of handing it as instructed. Attempting yo catch it I caught said thumb against the corner of the top of a leg. The sharp edge well let’s just say it caught a spot that bled a bunch even though it was a scrape!

Gunny sure does like his ammo cans!! :)
Yes he does.

For all that care. The bugger bled for an hour or so. I know scrapes to the head can do that but this was silly. I guess when you take a big chunk of skin it takes longer.

Anyway. I have a few things to do this morning, but this afternoon I’m planning on bracing the leg and working on the top.

I also have to decide where I’m going to put it. There are three possible places and all have pros and cons.

I’m throwing a few things into a box to go along with the item for your bench. I’m also going to send you something from my first aid kit to help you if and when you scratch yourself again.

Oh stop it

I really appreciate it.

I was just too lazy to go to the first aid kit. Plus the bench needed some blood to mark it!

I’ll post pics a bit later. I’m taking a break to watch the Caps game then will finish up!

Two weeks ago I was doing brakes on my daughters car, all 4 wheels. In a hurry and ended up with a blood blister on my index finger. Couldn't really shoot or dryfire for a week. I had been signed up for a revolver match for about 6 weeks, this was for today. Loaded up 400 rounds for the match yesterday (Saturday) got my gear ready and so forth then went to bed. At 11:52 PM we were toned out for a structure fire, I' m out of bed and out the door as we can sometimes go a long time without seeing flames.

I personally was on-scene for 11 hours. Of course no revolver match for me today (bummer) and I feel like I have been run over by a semi-truck, I'm 59 and still do interior firefighting. But the good news is the blood blister is gone, rubbed right off by my structure gloves. So it wasn't a total loss.

My lady says, "if you aren't bleeding yet, you haven't finished or you forgot something".
And she's right!

Good to see it coming along, it's gonna be solid!

Looking good Hokie, been looking forward to seeing this thread while following Gunny's thread :) Glad you got your rear in order!

PS this reminds me to clear my bench ready for springtime...

Four or 5 years ago I managed to clear 4 feet or so in the basement for some space dedicated to me. I built a temporary 4' bench to clean firearms on and to reload on. I installed shelves for the "temporary" bench to store powder, primers, and a growing assortment of dies, tools, and turrets. Got to the point where I could not clean firearms on the temporary bench any more so I built a moveable bench from some modified plans that BDS shared a number of years ago. Now I struggle with a spot on the moveable bench because the underside is filled with various containers of brass, and the back has tools etc hanging from the peg board. I need more shelves, and what I wouldn't give for a longer loading bench.

Build it big enough, but in the end you make do with what you have. :) One day when the kids are grown and gone I'll move of the "temporary" benches. Until then........

Today was a busy day of meetings at work. So I’m wiped out.

So I came home, took the furry child out, then changed clothes and made some yummy chicken and rice! After that, I went down and cut the front to back bracing for the legs. I bolted them up and it’s now rock solid front to back.

This is the one brace. The other side is the same.

I had planned to do the rest of the bracing tonight, but being tired I don’t want to be playing with power tools. I’m not adverse to a little blood from a skinned knuckle but I’ll pass on saw or drill injuries.

It’s actually good that I didn’t do the side to side bracing as I thought of a better way to do it.

So tomorrow I’ll wrap that up. Or maybe later if I get a second wind

Since some of you were interested and asking for updates....

My son and I made the lower braces for the legs. The bench is now ROCK SOLID

Here’s a pic of the lower bracing. It’s funny but the bark and coloring make it look off, but they’re square and flush so I can put a shelf there (and this was taken before it was trued up)
