I love shooting all guns and have saved money to buy another range toy. I want something different. I’ve narrowed my choices to a Keltec CMR-30 or a Beretta ARX 100. I can get the keltec new for roughly $500, and the Beretta for $899. My main concerns are reliability and durability. Which would you pick and why?

If you want to skip to the portion that matters, start at the 20:00 minute mark. I’d love to own one and a PMR to match but just cannot stomach problematic firearms.

If your concerns are reliability and durability, than the Beretta is the clear choice. But you also said range toy, and the CMR seems like it would be a blast at the range.

I vote CMR.

Neither are my thing but of the two it would be the Beretta. The PMR-30 had problems when it came out and so does the CMR-30. 22 mag always seems to function poorly in semi auto, it's long, skinny and rimmed, none of which seem like positive attributes in an auto. Besides, what is 30 rounds of 22 mag gonna do in either a carbine or a pistol that 15 or 20 rounds (or more) of 9mm isn't? And the 9mm is gonna work... I'd consider getting a pistol cal carbine...

For that kind of money the CZ Scorpion EVO would be what I'd be looking at.

I’m interested in a M1 carbine as well, but USGI ones have gotten outrageous and I’ve heard mixed things about the new production Auto Ordnance rifles. I don’t really want to go with a 30-06 or 308 because my daughter enjoys shooting and that is a little much for her.

Where can you find a nice one for $900?

I would agree on the M1 carbine. The original fun gun and a historical arm as well. I love mine.

To find one under $900 work the gun shows, especially the "smaller" shows, say 200 tables or less. Those shows tend to have a higher percentage of small volume, part time dealers that may have lower prices or be more willing to deal.

The CMR-30 never really interested me... but I do like the PMR-30 for 30 rounds of .22 mag in such a light weight handgun.

I would put up a Ruger PC-9 for consideration. I can reload 9mm for cheaper than I can buy decent .22 mag which means lots of inexpensive range time. A 10/22 is a lot cheaper to shoot than a CMR-30 and has all sorts of options for pimping out.

My .30 carbine is one of my favorite guns and a REALLY nice SMOOTH shooter! The M1 carbine is so smooth because it is gas operated instead of blow back operated like most PCC's. I haven't seen cheap .30 carbine ammo in MANY years and .30 carbine brass costs three of four times what once fired 9mm brass costs me.

Everything I have seen in the last few years around here is north of $1,000 in rough shape. The new Auto Ordnace rifles look nice but I’ve read mixed reviews on quality. I like old guns, but they have just about priced me out of the market. Even the good shape Chinese SKS rifles I see at shows or in shops are close to $500 now. Someone paid $475 for one last weekend when I was in a gun store. ARs are cheap and everything else is going up. 10 years ago ARs were $1,000 and old guns were affordable.

Since your main concern is reliability and longevity i would go with the Beretta. I'm not saying the Kel-Tec is a bad gun, only the Beretta has a much better reputation.
Beretta, IF you value reliability and dependability. I have never had a jam, FTF, or FTE with any of my 4 Berettas. I have a PMR30, and it's a fun range toy, but a bit too finicky
to depend upon, in a pickle. It's jammed a number of times, FTFs, FTEs, and stovepipes.

I made a huge mistake a few years back when CMP had M1 Carbines for sale and spare original mags. I neighbouring it off because there was always another bill at home and then they were gone!!! IDIOT I am.
