I’m considering an AR9 but I want to understand them better before I jump in.

I have a few questions/assumptions/quandaries that I would like to straighten out before I throw money at my want list because truthfully I want a Destroyer Carbine.

Is an AR9 dimensionally different than an AR15? They appear to be shorter receivers typically in the magazine area and are cut usually for Glock mags. This means upper and lower must both be shorter.

Would the AR9 (assuming shorter) be realistically any better than a pinned magwell ar15? I can’t see it being any better other than about an inch shorter OAL and a few ounces of weight.

Are there any gas op 9mm uppers or are they all blowback? I hate blowback. Hate. Despise may also be accurate. Blowback is good for burp-guns but not for my purposes.

Since I have other ar15, would it not make more sense to just build another upper?

9MM AR actions are the standard AR 15 length. They either use a smaller magwell for Glock or SMG mags, or an insert that makes modded UZI or SMG mags usable. Mine has the insert. All AR 15 compatible stuff will fit mine. Triggers will fit any of them. All the AR 15 stocks, barrels, handguards etc will work.

Yes, you can just get an upper if you get an insert for your lower.

Get one, they are a ton of fun.

As he said the uppers and lowers are the same dimensions as normal. The dedicated 9mm lowers just look shorter because they shorten the magwell a bit to better match the 9mm mags, but the front takedown pin is still in the same spot.

Only parts that are different are

Mag well adapter (or dedicated lower)
Bolt
Barrrel
Buffer (need special heavy buffer)

Yes they are all blowback as are pretty much every 9mm carbine besides an mp5. They are awsome fun. This is mine built on a PSA colt mag lower, a bca side charging upper, and Faxon 10.5” barrel. With a scope on it shoots 2 moa.

Better to build a pistol with a brace rather than be forced to deal with a 16 inch barrel.

Depends on your intended use. While I agree with using a brace and skipping the SBR route, "pistol" ARs are not allowed in some matches.

I use mine as a trainer for my AR(s) and in IDPA matches (now approved). IDPA frowns on AR pistols:

Rifles permitted for use in PCC must*:
A. Be semi-automatic.
B. Use 9 mm, .357 Sig, .40 S&W, 10mm, and .45 ACP pistol caliber cartridges.
C. Designed to be fired from the shoulder and have a shoulder stock installed.

and:

1.1.1 PCC Excluded Features and Modifications (Non-Inclusive list):
A. Removing butt stock
B. Firearms not designed for use with a buttstock (for example: AR pistols with Sig Brace or equivalent)
C. Monopods, Bipods and Tripods
D. Drum or coupled magazines

Couple months ago I shot a 3GUN math and one of the guys in my squad brought an AR pistol, SO informed him they're not allowed there either, but let him finish the match because it's all he had.

I’ve been waiting for lowers that use M&P mags. I’ve finally started to see them along with one that has a system where you can change the mag receiver. I have no ide if they woek well but they look cool.
