but can I buy a .308/7.62 upper receiver and put it on my Bushmaster AR15 lower? If its possible what brand should I look at for a reasonable price range? Would I need any extras other than magazines? I would want a flat top receiver to put a scope. Any info would be appreciated.

No, "AR10s" use a longer action so they won't fit on a traditional AR15 lower.

Now Colt offers their LE901 which is their .308 AR that can use standard AR15 uppers with an adapter

As a basis, what you need to know is that 5.56/.223 ammo is different size than 7.62/.308 so the receivers would not be compatible.

So in general, use AR15 parts for 5.56/.223 , AR10 for 7.62/308. Only the accesories would probably be interchangeable. Hope that helps.

AR-10s are much bigger and heavier than AR-15's. It is not pleasant to hump around a 12 lb gun. If you want more firepower for your ar-15 based gun look to .300 AAC blacout or 6.8 SPC uppers. Olympic Arms makes some WSSM uppers based off the AR-15 platform as well.

Even the NM AR10 is not 12 lbs, it's about 10 lbs and that's with an HBar profile barrel and quad rail. An AR10 with a infantry profile 20" barrel and reasonable optic should come in at 10lbs or less.

The 5.56 AR uses a shorter action than the 7.62x51 AR and the receivers between the two are not compatible. The exception is the Colt 901. It's a 308 length rifle with a lower receiver that's designed to also accept AR15 uppers

Sure, you just won't be able to put any ammo in it. The mag wells are different sizes. You will need an AR-10 lower to make it work.

Not just the mag wells.

The entire receiver is longer, wider, taller, and they use larger pins.

The only way you're putting an AR-10 upper on an AR-15 lower is with duct tape.

Buffer tubes and furniture are about all that's compatible between them.
